Liturgy of Holy Eucharist & Renewal of Vows for Rostered Leaders

The annual Renewal of Vows for rostered leaders will be held Tuesday, March 31, 2015, at St. Paul Lutheran Church, 127 York Street, Hanover. The Liturgy of Holy Eucharist with the renewal of ordination, consecration and commissioning vows begins at 10:30 a.m. This service will include the blessing of oils, with Bishop Dunlop preaching and presiding.

The congregation of St. Paul graciously extended an invitation for leaders to join them for a light Lenten lunch at noon--a long-standing tradition at St. Paul. Pastor Richard Jorgensen will provide an inspirational Lenten meditation during the luncheon. There is no registration fee for the service or luncheon.  However, a free will offering will be received to defray the cost of the luncheon prepared by St. Paul's kitchen committee.

Clergy are invited to vest in cassock and surplice or alb and red stole.  Associates in ministry, deaconesses and diaconal ministers are invited to vest according to their parish custom. Please join us as we move through the rhythms of Holy Week and prepare to celebrate our Lord's passion, death, and resurrection.

GLOBAL NEWS & CONNECTIONS

Raising Awareness and Funds to Stop Human Trafficking
Photo: Norbert Fry
Stephanie Strauss is passionate about helping to stop human trafficking locally, across the United States, and around the world. Founder of PUREhope Coffee House, an event held annually at St. Peter Lutheran Church in Highspire, Stephanie and PureHope sponsored a viewing of the powerful documentary film In Plain Sight: Stories of Hope and Freedom at St. Peter Lutheran Church in Middletown in February. More than 75 people came out on an icy afternoon to watch the film, enjoy refreshments, and hear a presentation by Stephanie and a representative from The Samaritan Women, a restoration house in the Baltimore area.

"It was so important for this screening of In Plain Sight: Stories of Hope and Freedom to take place in Central PA," said Strauss, "and it could not have happened at a better time as news
Photo: Norbert Fry
articles have begun to pop up about measures being taken to prevent trafficking along Route 15 and other areas in the mid-state."

A free will offering at the screening raised $400 for The Samaritan Women and $170 for Hope for Justice, both organizations dedicated to stopping human trafficking.  "I am grateful that so many people came to the screening and took the first step in being the end to trafficking, being aware," said Strauss. "Our God is a God of justice and restoration and it is time we join Him."

And speaking of PUREhope Coffee House, this year's event is scheduled for Saturday, April 25, at St. Peter's Lutheran Church in Highspire. A donation of $5 will get you a bottomless beverage cup and entertainment by Paul Zavinksy, Seasons, and friends. Proceeds benefit Hope for Justice and Blood : Water Mission. ELCA Youth Gathering Planning Meetings Scheduled for April

Congregations participating in the ELCA Youth Gathering in Detroit this July, are invited to send adult advisors and one or two youth to one of a series of pre-trip planning meetings being offered by our synod Gathering Coordinator Charlie Roberts.

The meetings will be held on Thursday, April 16, at 6 PM, at the synod offices in Harrisburg, Monday, April 20, at 11:30 AM, also at the synod offices, Monday, April 27, at 6:00 PM, at St Luke, Chambersburg, and Wednesday, April 29, at a site TBA in the Hanover or York area.

These briefings will help prepare congregational leaders for the details of the event, including what to pack, the daily schedule, movement around the city, and more. While it is not necessary to RSVP, if you know you will be attending, drop Charlie Roberts a note by text, 717.579.0349, or email to the Office for Children, Youth & Family Ministry, at croberts@lss-elca.org.

Rostered Leaders Retreat Offers Time to Relax and Recharge

Sign up now for the Rostered Leaders Retreat April 12-13. This is a post-Easter getaway where we can all relax, refresh and renew.  This year we will hold it in the newly expanded (and really nice!) SchreiberHaus at Camp Kirchenwald.  Synod Director for Resource Ministries Marsha Roscoe will guide us in the retreat theme "Centered in Christ - Spiritual Journeying." The retreat explores various spiritual disciplines to strengthen Christ-consciousness (themes such as Mindfulness, Awareness and Gratitude).  The cost is $65 and includes lodging, breakfast, lunch, and materials. This event is sponsored by the Leadership Support Committee. Click here to register. The deadline for registration is April 5.

Leadership Link of the Week

Our synod grows stronger because its dedicated leaders continue to learn new ways of approaching ministry and serving God's people. Check here each week for a link to a video, article, podcast, powerpoint presentation or other media that will help our leaders embrace new ideas and learn new insights into ministry.  Share and Share Alike

Providing options -- for worship or for learning -- is an important key to keeping our ministries relevant for the 21st Centuries, but that takes a skill that many of us in the church are not accustomed to: sharing. Every alternative worship service that we add or innovative Christian education class that we create has to share resources of the church, such as space, time, volunteers or money. This blog post from the Episcopal Church Foundation talks about how to create a sharing culture. What would work for your congregation?

Brown Bag Leadership Lunch: Mandated Reporting Law, April 9

Because of sweeping state laws that took effect on Jan. 1, Pennsylvania congregations are required to implement big changes to how they retain, recruit and screen employees and volunteers who work with children. The laws, passed in the wake of the Jerry Sandusky sex-abuse scandal, require criminal and child-abuse history clearances for all employees and volunteers who work with children. It also classifies them as mandated reporters who have legal obligations to report suspected child abuse.

The April 9 Brown-Bag Leadership Lunch will provide an overview of the new laws, how they impact volunteers and how congregations can work to get into compliance with the laws. Topics covered will include background clearances, confidentiality, safe record-keeping and assisting in finding education and training for mandated reporters.

The lunch is designed for congregational leaders who are responsible for ensuring their congregation is in compliance with the new law.

Discussion starts at 10:00 a.m. in the lunchroom of the Synod Office, 900 S. Arlington Ave., Harrisburg, PA  17109. We will eat lunch and begin wrapping up at about noon. The event ends at 1:00 p.m.

(To get to the lunchroom from the lobby of the Synod Office's main entrance, follow the corridor that goes off to the left. Just before the end, take the stairway at the left. On the ground floor, the lunchroom will be on your left.)

Rostered Leaders and Eligible Spouses: Please Take Your Health Assessment Today!

If you (and your eligible spouse if applicable) have already taken the 2015 Mayo Clinic Health Assessment, please accept our thanks. If you have not, please do so today. As of February 28, only 61 rostered leaders/spouses had completed the assessment. We need at least an additional 115 participants to meet our 65% goal and earn an estimated $55,000 in savings for our congregations. Click here to track our progress and that of other synods, churchwide units, and seminaries. Spouses--click here for detailed instructions about how to access the assessment.

The April 30 deadline will be here quickly, and it takes only a few minutes to work through the questions. This year it's even easier because you can access the assessment from the main Portico Benefits page by clicking here. Not only will you earn $150 in wellness dollars to offset deductibles and eligible medical expenses, you'll also help all participating congregations in our synod save money on premiums AND help us earn this year's rebate to help fund next year's wellness retreat. It's good stewardship of your health and resources. Thank you!
