Synod Candidacy Committee Plays Key Role in Discernment Process

You sense a call to ministry, you pray and listen, you do your research and preparation, and you enter the candidacy process. Now what? This is where our Lower Susquehanna Synod Candidacy

Pastor John Largen addresses candidates and members of the committee at a recent retreat.

Committee steps in to walk beside you from entrance, through endorsement, culminating with approval and your final steps to commissioning, consecration, or ordination.

"We as Lutherans believe in the importance of both an internal and external call," says Pastor Thomas McKee, assistant to the bishop and liaison to the committee. "The members of the Candidacy Committee provide that external affirmation that our candidates are being called to rostered ministry , help to equip our candidates for ministry, and finally evaluate their preparedness to engage in that ministry.

Pastor Mark Kopp serves on the Candidacy Committee

Currently there are 38 candidates at various stages in the process: 31 in the pastoral track, one in the deaconess track, five in the diaconal ministry track, and one in the associate in ministry track. "Many of our candidates enter the process unsure of where they are being led and unsure if they have the gifts and talents for rostered leadership within the church," says Joe Ricci, chair of the Candidacy Committee and a lay leader at Trindle Spring Lutheran Church, Mechanicsburg.

"As I see the gifts of these candidates honed and polished, I see confidence in the call increase and a growing comfort with the idea of being a called, equipped child of God," says Ricci. "My greatest joy is realized when I see a candidate blossom and mature into an articulate, compassionate and well-trained, leader during the formation process that occurs at seminary."

Both Ricci and McKee stress the importance of the candidacy process. "It takes time to discern, to grow, to be equipped, and to be confident in making sacred promises," says McKee. "Following all the steps in the process gives time for discernment, preparation, and readiness to undertake such a sacred trust."

In advice for potential candidates, both Ricci and McKee emphasize the value of listening to God, to others, and to oneself in discerning a call to ministry. "Boldly trust the calling of God," says Ricci. "It is always amazing to me how many people entering candidacy have done so after many years of resistance to the calling of God."

"If you hear a still small voice, feel a tug on your heart, have a reoccurring thought, stop and take what you hear or feel seriously," adds McKee. "If God is calling you, God will continue to pursue you until you answer God's call."

If you are discerning a call to ministry and want more information, call Pastor McKee at 717-652-1852 and consider taking part in The Weekend, a discernment event held annually in April at Gettysburg Lutheran Seminary. (See details in article below.)

He is in Lancaster for this event sponsored by Holy Trinity Lutheran Church; he will deliver the commencement address at Lutheran Theological Seminary, Philadelphia on the following Tuesday.

Dr. Raheb holds a PhD in Theology from the Philipps University at Marburg, Germany, is married and has two daughters.

Upcoming Events to Benefit LSS ABMN Ministries

Mark your calendars for two upcoming events sponsored by synod congregations to benefit the ELCA Malaria Campaign and the Lutheran Camping Corporation! Both events offer delicious and fun ways to share a good meal, fine fellowship, and make a real difference in ministries our synod is affirming and supporting through the Always Being Made New Campaign.

On Sunday, March 22, Trinity Lutheran Church, Camp Hill, will host "Seeding the Future" -- a Camp Nawakwa Benefit, a dinner and silent auction to benefit the Camping Corporation's "Seeding the Future" Campaign. Dinner will be served from 4:30 - 6:30 p.m., followed with a program from 6:30 - 7:00 p.m. The Silent Auction will conclude at the end of the dinner. The cost of the meal is $15 (no cost for children under 12), but everyone must have a ticket. For more information, call 717-737-8695 for information. Trinity is located at 2000 Chestnut St. in Camp Hill.

On Sunday, April 19, Tree of Life Lutheran Church, Harrisburg, will host an END MALARIA African Meal. There will be two seatings for the meal -  12:00 noon - 2:00 p.m. and again from 4:00 - 6:00 p.m. You are invited to worship with the Sudanese Worshiping Community beginning at 2:00 p.m. All proceeds will benefit the ELCA Malaria Campaign.

The buffet style meal will feature ethnic food from African nations. Displays and learning experiences about the Malaria Campaign and our African partner nations will punctuate the meal.  Advance tickets ($15 per adult, $5 children age 4-12, 3 and under are free) may be purchased through your congregation or online using Paypal at  http://tinyurl.com/mlgnwy3. Orders will  close on Monday, April 13. Click here for an informational cover letter. Click here for a ticket order form to use in your congregation. Tree of Life is located at 1492 Linglestown Rd., Harrisburg.

Note: To date, our synod has reached $280,085 (or $2.75/baptized member) toward our $500,000 goal. The ELCA Campaign has reached $13,758,685 which is 90% of the ABMN goal.  This translates to $3.39/baptized ELCA member. Consider having a special World Malaria Day offering during April in your congregation.

The Weekend: A Discernment Event for Those Considering Ministry

The Weekend, April 17-19, is an experience for those discerning a call to ministry. Participants will be invited to wonder, imagine, and learn how God is calling them through worship- both ancient and new, small group conversations, hearing and sharing stories, spending time with other participants, students and their families, faculty, and staff, and through a new learning platform we're calling "GETT Talks" (GETT stands for Gather, Educate, Tell, Transform, and are similar to the popular TED Talk format). The Weekend is a low-pressure, low-cost, spirituality-focused event intended to create an environment where those in all stages of discernment feel welcome, comfortable, and supported. For more information, including a full schedule and registration, please visit www.ltsg.edu/theweekend.

10 Questions First-Time Visitors are Asking

Most of us are so accustomed to church culture that walking into the sanctuary on Sunday morning is as familiar as walking into our living room. But it's not that way for many of our congregations' first-time visitors -- especially those who are unchurched or who may have attended non-liturgical congregations. Here are some questions our visitors are likely to be asking. The more you can anticipate, the better the chances that your first-time visitors won't be your last-time visitors. From ChurchLeaders.com. Why not discuss this with your council, outreach committee or colleague group? Click the headline to be redirected to the website.

Brown Bag Leadership Lunch: Mandated Reporting Law, April 9

Because of sweeping state laws that took effect on Jan. 1, Pennsylvania congregations are required to implement big changes to how they retain, recruit and screen employees and volunteers who work with children. The laws, passed in the wake of the Jerry Sandusky sex-abuse scandal, require criminal and child-abuse history clearances for all employees and volunteers who work with children. It also classifies them as mandated reporters who have legal obligations to report suspected child abuse.

The April 9 Brown-Bag Leadership Lunch will provide an overview of the new laws, how they impact volunteers and how congregations can work to get into compliance with the laws. Topics covered will include background clearances, confidentiality, safe record-keeping and assisting in finding education and training for mandated reporters.

The lunch is designed for congregational leaders who are responsible for ensuring their congregation is in compliance with the new law.

Discussion starts at 10:00 a.m. in the lunchroom of the Synod Office, 900 S. Arlington Ave., Harrisburg, PA  17109. We will eat lunch and begin wrapping up at about noon. The event ends at 1:00 p.m.

(To get to the lunchroom from the lobby of the Synod Office's main entrance, follow the corridor that goes off to the left. Just before the end, take the stairway at the left. On the ground floor, the lunchroom will be on your left.)

"Dining with DIAKON" Partners with Thrivent to Benefit At-Risk Youth

Mark your calendars for April 16 and enjoy a great meal for a great cause. This is the 11th annual "Dining with DIAKON" event and will again be held at the Harrisburg Hilton. Enjoy a terrific meal and taste wonderful recipes from local business and community leaders who are serving as "guest chefs" for the evening. Leading up to and including the night of the event, these guest chefs compete to see who can raise the most financial support for Diakon Youth Services, with the winner being announced at the end of the evening. The real winners, though, are the children and teens served by Diakon Youth Services.

Thrivent Financial Community Engagement Leader Rick Baldwin, a member of St. John Lutheran Church in Littlestown, is one of this year's guest chefs. "Having grown up in Baltimore City," says Baldwin, "I was blessed to have escaped the violence, drugs, and dysfunction that an inner-city environment can create, and this is a ministry to which I feel especially called to support."

You can support Baldwin in his guest chef competition in several ways: by making an online gift, by purchasing tickets for the April 16 event, by holding your own fundraiser using your Thrivent Action Team (you'll get really cool t-shirts, too), by sharing this information, and by praying for the success of this event and for those youth who find themselves in difficult situations. For more information, contact Baldwin at 717-476-7627 or email him at rick.baldwin@thrivent.com.

Rostered Leaders and Eligible Spouses: Please Take Your Health Assessment Today!

If you (and your eligible spouse if applicable) have already taken the 2015 Mayo Clinic Health Assessment, please accept our thanks. If you have not, please do so today. As of February 28, only 61 rostered leaders/spouses had completed the assessment. We need at least an additional 115 participants to meet our 65% goal and earn an estimated $55,000 in savings for our congregations. Click here to track our progress and that of other synods, churchwide units, and seminaries.

The April 30 deadline will be here quickly, and it takes only a few minutes to work through the questions. This year it's even easier because you can access the assessment from the main Portico Benefits page by clicking here. Not only will you earn $150 in wellness dollars to offset deductibles and eligible medical expenses, you'll also help all participating congregations in our synod save money on premiums AND help us earn this year's rebate to help fund next year's wellness retreat. It's good stewardship of your health and resources. Thank you!
