And a Little Child Shall Lead Them
A few Sundays ago, Pastor Scott Davis of Brickerville United Lutheran Church (BULC) was

handed an envelope addressed to "Rosie." The donor instructed Pastor Davis to make sure that Rosie and others like her got the gift.
"When I opened the envelope on Tuesday, I was stunned to find $10 inside," Davis said. "Okay, not a bountiful gift...except this is a primary-school girl who was the donor. And her motivation arose from her profound understanding of the Gospel from two children's messages she'd heard me preach."
In October 2013, BULC was visited by a disheveled unwashed homeless woman (a member, following through on the youth's outside homeless experience the previous month), complete with shopping cart and her favorite stuffed animal. At the time of the children's message, she came forward with the children. Sensing their fear, Rosie introduced herself and shared her pet stuffed animal. Unknown to any of of the congregaion, Rosie's tender vulnerability touched Kylie, one of the youngsters who had come forward, in a very special way.
Fast forward to a Sunday last November. Pastor Davis shared the Parable of the Talents in the children's message, giving each of the children a one-dollar bill with the instruction to invest the money in some ministry that might benefit someone else. Three visiting grandsons donated their dollars to Toys for Tots. Kylie's brother gave his to the Ephrata Public Library.
Kylie took her dollar, and with a "match" given by another benefactor, made and sold bracelets. And like the servant in the parable, she returned the investment multiplied! Her gift was to the one she remembered needed her love...Rosie. Pastor Davis sent Kylie's gift to Lancaster's Water Street Ministries, "for those who like 'Rosie' are homeless and hungry in our community."

GLOBAL NEWS & CONNECTIONS
Save the Date for World Malaria Day 2015!
From the beginning, the ELCA Malaria Campaign has had a goal to raise $15 million by 2015. Can you believe that 2015 has begun? Now is the time to mark your calendars for World Malaria Day 2015! World Malaria Day is observed internationally on April 25, which happens to land on a Saturday this year. We are encouraging congregations to commemorate World Malaria Day on Sunday, April 26, 2015. This will be the final observance of World Malaria Day within the ELCA Malaria Campaign, and it is our hope that many people participate! Consider a special activity or offering on this Sunday to help our synod reach its goal.

New Child Protection Legislation Will Impact Congregational Youth & Family Ministry
If it's not on your radar, it should be! New Pennsylvania legislation designed to provide additional protection for children in institutional settings will likely impact all congregations, particularly around the ways we screen volunteers and youth workers.
Many of you have already contacted the synod Office for Children, Youth & Family Ministry to inquire about whether your child protection policies and current background checks comply with the new legislation. Our office strongly recommends that you send either a pastor, staff youth worker, or volunteer to one of the two remaining Boundary Training Workshops being provided by our synod staff. In fact, it is now required that all pastors and rostered leaders attend this training once every three years. Not only will this workshop provide you with the training now required by the state, but it will also help reveal where your congregational policies may be lacking, and how you might be able to bring them into compliance with current state mandated guidelines.
Visit our synod website, http://www.lss-elca.org/blog/practical-models-for-faith-formation-in-the-congregation/, to find out how to get registered. Upcoming workshops are scheduled for Saturday, March 14, 2015, at Good Shepherd Lutheran in Lancaster, and for Tuesday, May 5, 2015, at St. Paul Lutheran, Biglerville. Both events are planned from 9:00 AM - 3:00 PM. We ask that you please preregister to attend. While there is no charge for the workshop and materials, we do ask that participants make a free-will offering to help defray the cost of lunch.

Leadership Link of the Week
Our synod grows stronger because its dedicated leaders continue to learn new ways of approaching ministry and serving God's people. Check here each week for a link to a video, article, podcast, powerpoint presentation or other media that will help our leaders embrace new ideas and learn new insights into ministry. You've heard of the "Nones" - those whose religious affiliation is None. But there is a growing multitude of church ex-members who have simply left church for a variety of reasons, including disillusionment, burnout and boredom. They're sometimes called the de-churched. They have not abandoned their faith. They are not Nones. Rather, call them the "Dones." What can we do about it? Commentator Thom Schultz has some ideas. Which would work for your church?
Upcoming Brown Bag Leadership Lunch:
February 12 - Website Ministry Basics with Sharron and Marsha
Want to know more about how your congregation's website can be used for ministry and mission? Need to know how to get started in digital ministry or how to update and enhance what you already have? Trying to decipher platforms and hosts? Join Deacon Marsha Roscoe and Pastor Sharron Blezard to learn and share tips and techniques. If you are interested in having your website evaluated for this event, please contact Pastor Sharron Blezard (717-652-1852, ext. 102). We gather at 10 a.m., work for a couple hours and then eat at about noon as we finish up our discussion. All congregational leaders are welcome. Registration is not required but it would be great if you could let Cathy Deitrich of the synod office (cdeitrich@lss-elca.org) know if you're attending so we can make sure to have enough materials.
(To get to the lunchroom from the lobby of the Synod Office's main entrance, follow the corridor that goes off to the left. Just before the end, take the stairway at the left. On the ground floor, the lunchroom will be on your left.)
