        | | Serving Up Faith and Food One Meal at a Time
Meal packing events don't happen only at Synod Assembly. Conferences and congregations large and small are able to host an event that is inter-generational, easy to put together, and has an immediate effect on hunger--locally, abroad, or both. These hand-on service opportunities also pair well with educational opportunities to learn about root causes of hunger and advocacy activities to give voice to the complex issues behind hunger. Here's an update on three meal-packing events held this fall across our synod.
Mannsville Lutheran Church in Elliottburg (Perry Conference) is a small congregation with a big heart. Members of the congregation, along with Pastor Bob Swartz, decided to put their hands to God's work with an event called "Feeding the 15,000." On Sunday morning, September 28, the congregation gathered with friends, members of a local scout troop and Lion's Club, and two county commissioners to work with Rev. Matthew Martin of End Hunger NE for a combination worship service and service event. More than 70 of God's children from age 5 to 80+ packaged 18,480 nutritionally complete macaroni and cheese dinners for distribution locally and regionally through the Central Pennsylvania Food Bank.
"We went to work after the homily and packed these meals in less than two hours," said congregational president Deke Gilbert. "Each dinner cost a quarter, and the congregation funded the entire thing. The Perry County Food Bank brought a truck, and we carried the boxes right out of the building."

Almost two years ago over 200 people jammed Fellowship Hall at St. Matthew Lutheran Church in Hanover to pack more than 40,000 meals for the hungry, primarily school-age children. Young and old alike focused on the task at hand with smiles on their faces, a sense of purpose in their eyes, and joy in their hearts.   That event left such a profound impression on those involved that St. Matthew is partnering with Stop Hunger Now to do it again on Saturday, October 25, in the fellowship hall, located at 30 West Chestnut Street in Hanover.  Only this time the entire community is invited to join in, with packing beginning at 11:00 a.m. with a goal to pack at least 30,000 meals by raising over $8,800.     The congregation is partnering with Stop Hunger Now to pack nutritionally complete meals that will go to one of the 65 countries served by Stop Hunger Now. Visit www.stmattlutheran.org to donate and/or volunteer, or stop by the St. Matthew church office.     "We want as many people from Hanover involved as possible, said Senior Pastor Daniel Yeiser. "It's a real blessing to those who receive the food, but it is also a blessing to those who give.  Every dollar provides hope.  Every set of hands makes a difference.  It is yet another example of 'God's Work. Our Hands.'  We are called to feed the hungry as Christ has fed us."     On Saturday, November 1, congregations of the Chambersburg Conference will gather with Bishop Dunlop to worship, pack meals for the hungry, and enjoy a concert by Captive Free. Solomon's Lutheran Church, 4856 Wayne Rd., Chambersburg, will host the event that begins at 3:00 p.m. "This is the second year we've hosted this event," said Sharon Hardel, Director of Christian Education at Trinity Lutheran Church, Chambersburg, and one of the event's organizers. "We still have plenty of room for volunteers of all ages and a need for donations to pay for the supplies. Everyone is welcome." Supplemental funding is provided for this event by Thrivent. Participants are asked to bring a non-perishable food item for the Thrivent Brown Bag Program. For more information call Sharon at 717-263-8156. (Thanks to Deke Gilbert, Sharon Hardel, and Doug West for information and photos for this week's Food & Faith feature.) |

 | GLOBAL NEWS & CONNECTIONS
New Life for Children in Tanzania
Thanks to the support of generous members of the ELCA and the work of ELCA missionaries Dr. Stephen Friberg and his wife, Bethany Friberg, children in rural Tanzania are getting the medical care they need.
| | | The Friberg family |

Stephen, a mission doctor, helps rural patients find the care they need for such conditions as heart defects and cleft palates. "Most of our patients would not get to specialized care without our help making the connections," says Bethany.   Elizabeth, a seven-year-old Maasai girl, was one of those patients. When the Fribergs discovered that rheumatic heart disease had gradually destroyed Elizabeth's mitral valve, leading to heart failure, they helped connect her to a mission hospital in Kenya for surgery. "Elizabeth had angels watching over her," Bethany says.
"At the end of the surgery, her heart went into ventricular fibrillation for 45 minutes. Her surgical team was uncertain if she would survive. Very slowly, her heart came back to normal. She was walking in a few days and was discharged after six days. Now Elizabeth has normal heart function.   "Her surgeon calls her a miracle," says Bethany. "Mission doctors know it is God who does the healing and pray before every operation."   Share this inspiring story with your congregation. For a colorful Word document to display on a bulletin board or use in a newsletter or PowerPoint presentation, visit www.ELCA.org/resources/globalchurch .  Please remember our sisters and brothers who are affected by the Ebola crisis, particularly in Liberia (where the companion synod of the Upper Susquehanna Synod is located) and Sierra Leone. E-mail Sharron Blezard or contact any Global Missions Committee member. Thanks to Randy Barr for last week's article about Bishop Mwaipopo's Consecration! |

Boundary Training for Rostered Leaders & Professional Ministry Workers
 | | | Photo: Henry Burrows, Creative Commons |
"I had not realized how pervasive this issue is for the 21st century church," said Bill Wilson, Director of the Center for Healthy Churches in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, reflecting on his first experience with a boundaries workshop. "I had not realized how reluctant we have been to confront the congregational systems we have built that have enabled and even encouraged fuzzy boundaries. I had grown insensitive to how vulnerable every minister is to a multitude of temptations."
Because this is such a crucial issue in the life of the church, our synod is offering three workshops this year so that rostered leaders and professional ministry workers are able to receive the necessary training and education hours required by many insurance policies and by our synod guidelines. All leaders should complete this basic workshop at least once every three years.  Workshop leaders Rob and Sharron Blezard attended ELCA Boundary Facilitator Training and use a combination of ELCA and FaithTrust Institute materials. All rostered leaders are expected to attend one of these events. Compensated youth workers and musicians are encouraged to attend.
To register, call Cathy Deitrich at 717-652-1852, ext. 104 or e-mail her at cdeitrich@lss-elca.org. There is no charge for the training. A free-will offering will be collected to defray lunch costs.   Are You Leading a Zombie Parish? Any teenager will tell you that zombies are all the rage these days in media and popular imagination. Typical of their kind, zombies in the hit show "Walking Dead" shuffle in a netherworld, neither enjoying the pleasures of life nor resting peacefully in death. Congregations can become like zombies, too, losing both the desire and the capacity to grow. In fact, some congregations may be on the path to zombiedom but not aware of it because leaders and members delude themselves into thinking that their inability to change or adapt is actually a strength that stems from a faithful commitment to tradition. And they can often maintain their undead existence for decades by consuming their own endowments or other resources that might otherwise go to healthier congregations. This 10-question quiz from the Episcopal Church Foundation takes a tongue-in-cheek approach but covers some pretty serious ground. Good discussion starter for your congregation council or congregational meeting.    Nov. 13 - Brown Bag Leadership Lunch: Talking About Same-Sex Marriage This year Pennsylvania became another state where same-gender couples may tie the knot. For many of our congregations this has stirred old controversies and raised new questions. The November Brown Bag Leadership Lunch will explore raising and handling the issue within a congregation. In our discussion we'll review the Guidelines on Same-Gender Marriage adopted by our Synod Council, as well as our denomination's 2009 Statement on Human Sexuality. Led by Assistant to the Bishop Rob Blezard.   The Brown-Bag Leadership Lunch is scheduled for 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Nov. 13 in the Lunchroom of our Synod Offices. Bring lunch and we'll have discussion and a meal together. Registration unnecessary. (To get to the lunchroom from the lobby of the Synod Office's main entrance, follow the corridor that goes off to the left. Just before the end, take the stairway at the left. On the ground floor, the lunchroom will be on your left.) |

As part of the congregation's 250 anniversary celebration, a group from Messiah College recently completed an archeological dig on the church property. "Our archeological dig was productive," said Joe Ricci. It revealed hand-cast nails typical of 1700's construction, a piece of pottery, plaster that was used between logs in buildings, and stone  typical of a floor or foundation. "The professor and students from Messiah College want to return to do further explorations," Ricci said. Click here to watch a Channel 27 news video and learn more about this exciting dig.   Leaders Wellness Retreat Registration Opens Looking for a way to beat those winter blahs?
