GLOBAL NEWS & CONNECTIONS

Our LSS Global Mission Committee is Here to Serve

The Lower Susquehanna Synod has three committees assigned to different aspects of our church's presence in global mission. In addition to the Global Mission Committee, the other two, which will be featured in future articles, are the World Hunger and Konde Diocese Committees. The Rev. Sharron Blezard, assistant to Bishop James Dunlop, serves as staff liaison to all three groups.

The Global Mission Committee serves at the pleasure of Bishop Dunlop and for everyone in our synod. Our responsibilities are to raise awareness of global missions across our synod, to cooperate with the ELCA Global Mission Unit, helping to recruit mission personnel and the financial support that they will need, and to work to establish synod and church partnerships with other countries, synods, or churches in shared missions.

Current members of the committee are:

Rev. Robert Hoover, from Luther Memorial Church, York, current chair

James Druckenbrod, from Trinity Lutheran Church, Chambersburg, secretary

Joyce Saeger, from Grace Lutheran Church, Lancaster

Rev. Elizabeth Polanzke, from Luther Memorial, York

Rev. Faye Snyder,  from St. Matthew Lutheran Church, Hanover, and

Jan Davis, also from St. Matthew Lutheran Church, Hanover.

Stephanie Strauss, from St. Peter's Lutheran Church, Highspire, and Sue McDonald from St. Michael Lutheran Church, Harrisburg, are our Synod Council liaisons to this committee.

In addition we are honored to have two consultants:  Chris Durand, from Tree of Life, Harrisburg, who is heading up the LSS Malaria Campaign, and Richard Sarker, a past ELCA missionary to Bangladesh.

This year in Carings and Sharings, we hope to highlight and update all of the global mission activities within our synod, both those involved in partnership with the ELCA, and those independent of the ELCA.  The purpose is not only for awareness of all that the 237 churches actually do, but also to be a forum that will allow both churches and individuals having similar mission ideas or interests to share and perhaps join each other for stronger impact.

We will need your help to learn what mission activities or interests you or your church may be involved in.  Please notify either Rev. Sharron Blezard, or any one of us, and together, we can highlight your global mission interest in Carings and Sharings.  We also welcome addition committee members who might wish to serve the church in this capacity.

Note: Do you have an idea from your congregation that you'd like to highlight? E-mail Sharron Blezard or contact any Global Missions Committee member. Thanks to Jim Druckenbrod for contributing this article.

"Hungry" for Winterfest?

Our annual synod-wide retreat for high school and college-aged youth, Winterfest is scheduled for January 2-4, 2015, at the Lancaster Host Resort. This year's theme, "Hungry," will challenge youth to consider the ways we are fed by Christ and called, equipped and sent out to feed others in Jesus' name. Youth and their advisors can look forward to much of the same fellowship, inspired worship, and learning opportunities they have come to expect at this event, and more.

Registration is now open, and there are convenient downloadable flyers, bulletin inserts, and other materials to help promote and share the event available at the synod website: http://www.lss-elca.org/youth-family/events/winterfest/.

About Willis' Finding God in a Bag of Groceries

The book describes how while working in a food pantry Willis "discovered a world of neighbors she never knew: the lonely, unemployed, chronically poor families, and middle-class folks surprised to be struggling in a great recession. To each, she offered a bag of groceries, a compassionate ear, and a heart of love. And from each, Willis learned about her own hunger for God, realizing her calling card-a bag of groceries-could change lives, including her own."  The book challenges us all to see our faith in new ways. Please consider Finding God in a Bag of Groceries for your next study session.

Leadership Link of the Week

Our synod grows stronger because its dedicated leaders continue to learn new ways of approaching ministry and serving God's people. Check here each week for a link to a video, article, podcast, powerpoint presentation or other media that will help our leaders embrace new ideas and learn new insights into ministry. Start with Why: How Great Leaders Inspire Everyone to Take Action.  Simon Sinek encourages us to begin with determining why we do something before launching into what we want to accomplish and how we'll get there. Explaining the why makes our beliefs and actions more meaningful to others. You can hear his 2010 Ted Talk on the importance of why here.

Don't miss our next Brown Bag Leadership Lunch, set for Oct. 9 from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. in the Lunchroom of the Synod Offices, 900 Arlington Avenue S, Harrisburg.  Rob Blezard , Assistant to the Bishop, will lead the discussion. Bring a lunch, your questions, and an open mind.

To get to the lunchroom from the lobby of the Synod Office's main entrance, follow the corridor that goes off to the left. Just before the end, take the stairway at the left. On the ground floor, the lunchroom will be on your left.

Conversations with Bishop Dunlop Scheduled

Bishop Dunlop is on the road again and coming to a congregation near you. This year, in addition to bringing you news about events and happenings across our synod, Bishop Dunlop will be leading a study on the ELCA document "The Use and the Means of Grace" and facilitating a conversation about communion practices in the ELCA and how that informs who we are as Lutheran Christians.

Presiding Bishop Elizabeth Eaton has asked the congregations and rostered leaders of the ELCA to engage in a vigorous conversation about this document in response to a resolution at the Churchwide Assembly in 2013 that asked the ELCA to re-think communion practices. There is a task force working on resources, but congregations are asked to grapple with some of these important issues surrounding the sacrament of Holy Communion. A great place to start is with "The Use of the Means of Grace." You can find this document on the ELCA website here as a downloadable PDF and additional resources for study at www.elca.org/worship. Join Bishop Dunlop at one of this year's Conversations to discuss this central issue of our faith and practice.
