        | | A Final Round-Up from "God's Work. Our Hands." Sunday

Good news from across our synod about "God's Work. Our Hands." Sunday activities and projects continues to pour in. Congregations partnered with one another, with social service and | | | Zion (Enola) Lutherans hopped, skipped, and jumped to help the hung |
relief agencies, and with local non-profits to make a real difference in creative and much-needed ways.    Zion (Enola) held a Hop-Skip-Jump for Hunger event to benefit New Hope Ministry's weekend "Power Pack" food program for local school students. Sponsored by the congregation's Christian Education Committee, youthful and youthfully-minded children and adults participated in games that involved hopping, skipping, and jumping. The congregation also sold hot and cold sandwiches and some mighty fine desserts. A good time was had by all!   St. Paul's (Broadway) in Hanover collected soap and shampoo and other items for personal hygiene. These essential items totaled over 75 pounds were donated to New Hope Ministries Food Pantry in Hanover. The congregation also collected towels , toothbrushes , combs, nail clippers and soap to make 60 Personal Care kits for distribution globally by Lutheran World Relief.  Big Spring United and Zion Lutheran Churches (Newville) worked together to complete a number of community projects--everything from gardening to painting--to help make their community a brighter and less hungry place.
Luther Memorial (York) held a Blood Drive on Wednesday, September 24, in the church parking lot as part of their commitment to God's Work. Our Hands.     Canadochly Lutheran Church (York) is holding their "God's Work. Our Hands" event this Saturday (9/27) in the form of a Community Day with a range of activities for neighbors near and far, including a Blessing of the Animals at 1:00 p.m., games, pumpkin painting, a prayer tent, and more. On Sunday, the congregation will worship outside at 10:00 a.m. and then host a community meal. Join them from 10:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. The church is located at 4921 E. Prospect Rd. in York.   Thanks to all our Lower Susquehanna Synod congregations who participated this year! Together we are doing God's work using our hands, feeding the hungry as we have been fed by Christ. |
 | Conversations with the Bishop 2014
Bishop Dunlop is on the road again and coming to a congregation near you. This year, in addition to bringing you news about events and happenings across our synod, Bishop Dunlop will be leading a study on the ELCA document "The Use and the Means of Grace" and facilitating a conversation about communion practices in the ELCA and how that informs who we are as Lutheran Christians.   Presiding Bishop Elizabeth Eaton has asked the congregations and rostered leaders of the ELCA to engage in a vigorous conversation about this document in response to a resolution at the Churchwide Assembly in 2013 that asked the ELCA to re-think communion practices. There is a task force working on resources, but congregations are asked to grapple with some of these important issues surrounding the sacrament of Holy Communion. A great place to start is with "The Use of the Means of Grace." You can find this document on the ELCA website here as a downloadable PDF and additional resources for study at www.elca.org/worship. Join Bishop Dunlop at one of this year's Conversations to discuss this central issue of our faith and practice.   Sunday October 19 Trinity Lutheran Church, 132 East Main Street, Mechanicsburg 3:00 - 5:00 p.m. Thursday, November 20 St. John's Lutheran Church, 175 East Main Street, New Freedom 6:30 - 8:30 p.m. Thursday, December 4 Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, 1000 North Front Street, Liverpool 6:30 - 8:30 p.m. Wednesday, January 21 Christ Lutheran Church, 30 Chambersburg St., Gettysburg 6:30 - 8:30 p.m. Sunday, Janurary 25 Zion Lutheran Church, 1905 Broad St., East Petersburg 3:00 - 5:00 p.m. (Photo: khrawlings, Creative Commons)

Lutheran Disaster Response Asks for our Help
Last week, Jim Druckenbrod wrote a wonderful article about how Lutherans are working on the ground to combat the Ebola Virus outbreak in West Africa. This week we received a request from the Rev. Dan Rift, who some of you will remember as our Churchwide Representative at this year's Synod Assembly. Please consider making a gift designated to help with this growing humanitarian disaster in addition to your regular offering this Sunday. Click here for a bulletin insert. Pastor Rift writes: In the past several months, the Ebola outbreak has claimed thousands of lives. The virus has spread rapidly, and with no approved vaccine and a high fatality rate, the World Health Organization is now calling it "one of the world's most lethal diseases." Ebola has spread to multiple countries, the hardest hit being Liberia, Sierra Leone and Guinea.
In addition to health care, one of the most urgent needs is food. As people in affected areas are quarantined to their homes, towns are being shut down to limit the spread of the disease and people are not able to work, harvest crops or purchase food. The shipment of food has also stopped because people from other countries fear contracting the virus."
"We need food," says the Rev. D. Jensen Seyenkulo, bishop of the Lutheran Church in Liberia. "There is a saying now: 'If we don't die of Ebola, we will die of starvation.'"

 | | | The Ebola crisis needs your help: Lutheran Disaster Response |

You can help. Your gifts to the Ebola Outbreak Response will be used, 100 percent, to assist those impacted by this crisis. Our partners and companion churches have requested our help in responding to the outbreak with food distributions, shipment of personal protective equipment, training health workers, outreach through education about prevention, and construction of an isolation unit at Phebe Hospital and School of Nursing in Liberia.Sincerely,
The Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA) and its predecessor church have walked with the people of Liberia for more than 150 years. Our long-standing relationship with our companions in Liberia and Sierra Leone provides a strong foundation to respond holistically to the needs of those who are suffering and living with the threat of Ebola.

Thank you for your prayers, your partnership and your gifts.

 The Rev. Daniel Rift
Director, ELCA World Hunger and Disaster Appeal

"Sundae Sunday" Gives Thanks for Companion Congregation Support
St. Peter's Lutheran Church of Lancaster held a "Sundae Sunday" on September 7, 2014. Sponsored by the Tanzania Mission Committee (TMC), free ice cream sundaes complete with hot
fudge, syrups, peanuts, sprinkles and whipped cream, were served after Sunday School and every Worship Service that day. Holding bowls of their favorite ice cream flavor and toppings, congregants enjoying ice cream could be seen happily milling about the narthex.
Why serve free ice cream??  TMC just wanted to say "THANK YOU"!!  Over the past seven years the members of St. Peter's and Word of Life Lutheran Church have supported Busoka Lutheran Church, the orphans and Busoka Village through prayers, monetary donations, quilts, sweaters, items for our yard sale, cookie baking for the annual cookie walk and other fund raisers.  Monies sent to Busoka have provided the orphans with uniforms, school supplies, testing fees, tuition for more advanced studies and special dinners.  In addition members of Busoka Lutheran Church received a power tiller and equipment, diesel fuel, trailer and banana and cacao plants.  What better way to say "THANK YOU" to our congregation for all their caring and support than with ice cream?!!
Is your congregation interested in partnering with one of the congregations in the Konde Diocese, our Companion Synod? Visit our synod website and look for updated information coming soon! This is a great way to learn, share, and grow together. |
 | Leadership Link of the Week

Our synod grows stronger because its dedicated leaders continue to learn new ways of approaching ministry and serving God's people. Check here each week for a link to a video, article, podcast, powerpoint presentation or other media that will help our leaders embrace new ideas and learn new insights into ministry.   Habits are Key to Transformative Leadership Our church is facing unprecedented challenges that asks more of our leaders than ever before, but many of us were never trained or prepared to serve God's people in the 21st century's emerging environment. Transformative leadership seeks to help by teaching us how to change ourselves first -- adopting new activities, committing to new habits that can help us form new, better, more appropriate mindsets. This article from Duke Divinity School provides an overview.
The article introduces the topic of our next Brown Bag Leadership Lunch, set for Oct. 9 from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. in the Lunchroom of the Synod Offices, 900 Arlington Avenue S, Harrisburg.  Rob Blezard , Assistant to the Bishop, will lead the discussion. Bring a lunch.

To get to the lunchroom from the lobby of the Synod Office's main entrance, follow the corridor that goes off to the left. Just before the end, take the stairway at the left. On the ground floor, the lunchroom will be on your left.
