More Stories from "God's Work. Our Hands." Sunday

"Hey, want some vegetables?" Pastor Bob Ierien asked a man walking his dog past the community garden outside St. James Lutheran Church, Lebanon, on God's Work. Our Hands." Sunday. The man left with a bag of carrots, tomatoes and other fresh produce. Tending to the outreach garden was just one of the activities offered by Holy Trinity Lutheran Church (Lebanon) and the four congregations of the Lebanon Lutheran Cooperative Ministry, of which St. James is one. Among other projects, volunteers also packed school and health kits for LWR, volunteered at the Lebanon County Humane Society shelter, did yard work for older members of the community and cleaned up neighborhood streets and parks.

Right: Volunteers at St. Luke, Shaefferstown, with some of the clothing items they collected for the needy.

The community at St. Luke, Shaefferstown, kept the needy in mind for its celebration, raffling off baskets of specialty items to benefit a community food program. The congregation also gathered more than 1,000 items of clothing for people who showed up for a community meal. Unclaimed items were taken to a clothing bank.

Kirchenwald was the destination for members of "the Swatara Creek Lutheran Community," an emerging fellowship among Holy Trinity, Hershey; Saint John, Hoernerstown; Saint Paul, Sand Hill; Shells, Grantville; Zion, Hummelstown; and Zion, Union Deposit. They did lots of work, including cleaning out cabins, painting, doing yard work and gardening.

Left: To help spark conversation about the Middle East, David Whitenack of St. Paul ordered a T-shirt with the logo in Arabic.

Right: Bishop Jim Dunlop works in the garden at Kirchenwald.

Mt. Eden Lutheran Church in Quarryville worshiped outside, and members brought offerings of fresh fruit and vegetables for the local food bank. "We had pears, apples, eggplant, peppers, tomatoes, corn, apples, watermelon, and peaches," Pastor Traci Glover said. "The food bank was greatly appreciative of the produce!"

Mea Culpa: In last week's Carings & Sharings, we misspelled former Bishop Carol Hendrix last name as Hendricks. Our apologies for the error! Thank goodness Lutherans are grounded in grace.

Conversations with the Bishop 2014

Bishop Dunlop is on the road again and coming to a congregation near you. This year, in addition to bringing you news about events and happenings across our synod, Bishop Dunlop will be leading a study on the ELCA document "The Use and the Means of Grace" and facilitating a conversation about communion practices in the ELCA and how that informs who we are as Lutheran Christians.

Presiding Bishop Elizabeth Eaton has asked the congregations and rostered leaders of the ELCA to engage in a vigorous conversation about this document in response to a resolution at the Churchwide Assembly in 2013 that asked the ELCA to re-think communion practices. There is a task force working on resources, but congregations are asked to grapple with some of these important issues surrounding the sacrament of Holy Communion. A great place to start is with "The Use of the Means of Grace." You can find this document on the ELCA website here as a downloadable PDF and additional resources for study at www.elca.org/worship. Join Bishop Dunlop at one of this year's Conversations to discuss this central issue of our faith and practice.

GLOBAL NEWS & CONNECTIONS

Boots on the Ground!

Do you know where the money goes when we as individuals or as Lower Susquehanna Synod congregations make donations to Lutheran Disaster Response International? Lutherans wish to respond generously to global emergencies when we become aware of them, yet often we do not know the best avenue to get our funds where the need is most critical, and we wonder how effective our giving really is.

Well, guess what? When you give to organizations such as Lutheran Disaster Response International and Lutheran World Relief (LWR), you can be assured that your generosity is making an immediate difference. For example, LWR already has "boots on the ground" in the response to the Ebola epidemic in West Africa. The Ebola outbreak has already resulted in 2,288 deaths in Liberia, Guinea and Sierra Leone, a roughly 50% mortality out of the 4,269 cases of victims infected with this virus.

Lutherans have long made a difference in Liberia. In fact, both the Curran and Phebe hospitals were established in Liberia in the 1920's by the Lutheran Church. The Phebe Hospital is the largest public health facility in Liberia. Today, both facilities are right in the middle of this epidemic and struggling to maintain effective staffing.

In August the ELCA gave $10,000 in humanitarian assistance to the Lutheran Church in Liberia, including personal protective equipment, allowing the medical staff to be protected from the virus as they care for victims. This money was given through the Lutheran Disaster Response International to the Lutheran Church in Liberia.

The facilities that give the care, established by the Lutheran Church, ARE already present in these countries. Donations we give go to where the need is. Remember the global mission field in your giving.

Youth Mission Trip to Philadelphia Makes Lasting Impact

Story by Isabelle Frye and video by Addy Fry

Philadelphia Broad Street Mission Trip 2014
Philadelphia Broad Street Mission Trip 2014
This past July, a handful of us from St. Luke Lutheran, Chambersburg, embarked on a mission trip in inner city Philadelphia with a program called Broad Street Ministry. Going into it, I had no idea what to expect. I knew we would be helping people and the community but that was about it. So I showed up with an air mattress and an open mind. Throughout the week, we teamed up with a number of service organizations including Manna, which creates meals for terminal illness patients and their families. We also visited several child care, education, and spiritual enrichment programs like Beacon Church and St. James School.

The work that hit me the hardest was when we joined several people experiencing homelessness and sold newspapers written by these people called One Step Away. It is a more dignified way for people experiencing homelessness to earn even a small profit to survive off of. As we stood on the street corners of our city of brotherly love and sisterly affection, I became thoroughly appalled as hundreds of people walked past us without a second glance and even more astonished at those who retorted with insensitive remarks. This opened my eyes more fully upon the grave problems that face our country and unfortunately the entire world.

Those of us who are fortunate enough to have things that we want refuse to acknowledge those with less or to think about how much better their day would be if we simply smiled at them. Our new friends at Broad Street Ministry truly put hard work and love into what they do to better our world. I hope that there will be a day that this kind of dedication spreads globally and the struggle that many people are faced with can finally diminish and everyone can be accepted as they are rather than anyone feeling as though they should change. God made each and every one of us just how he intended and we should fulfill that image in His name.

Youth from Trinity, Mount Joy, and Trinity, Chambersburg, also traveled to Broad Street Ministry this summer. Be sure to check out this video from the youth at Trinity, Mount Joy! You'll be inspired.

Good Shepherd Members Provide 100 Mosquito Nets to Combat Malaria

Lutherans at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Liverpool put their hands to work on Sunday, September 7, to raise money for the Malaria Campaign. The number of mosquitoes on congregation's mosquito net display increased by 100 on that day. The congregation held a Fall Fest which included a yard sale, craft table, food stand and free games for all the kids. The event and the congregation's hard work raised $1,005.07 for their malaria campaign. That's 100 mosquito nets and 100 families who will sleep easier and without worry about this disease.

Leadership Link of the Week

Our synod grows stronger because its dedicated leaders continue to learn new ways of approaching ministry and serving God's people. Check here each week for a link to a video, article, podcast, powerpoint presentation or other media that will help our leaders embrace new ideas and learn new insights into ministry. (Photo: Chris Carter, Creative Commons)

Why is it so many congregations seem to be stuck in neutral -- unable to move forward as times change and the world rushes past? Andy Stanley from North Point Community Church addresses this and has "tough love" wisdom for pastors and church leaders. This challenging video from ChurchLeaders.com is worth watching and discussing with colleague groups, conference gatherings and your congregation council.

The next "Brown Bag Leadership Lunch" will be from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Oct. 9 in the cafeteria at our Synod Office in Harrisburg. The topic will be "Becoming a Transformative Leader." What are the habits, ideas and attitudes that we can embrace to help us become leaders who can equip our churches to advance God's mission?
