        | | Many Hands Across our Synod Make  "God's Work. Our Hands." Sunday a Success

From Chambersburg to Columbia and from Harrisburg to Hanover--and all points in between--Lower Susquehanna Synod Lutherans donned yellow shirts and put their hands and hearts to God's work. Look for highlights of the day's activities and events in the next few editions of Carings & Sharings. If you have pictures from your event, please be sure to contact Sharron Blezard in our synod office so that we can share your good news. Thanks to everyone who took part in making sure that the light of Christ shone brightly across Central Pennsylvania!     More than 50 volunteers from Harrisburg-area congregations, including Christ (Allison Hill), St. John's (Hornerstown), Messiah, and Epiphany, used their hands to do God's work on September 6 and 7. Groups spent the day Saturday supporting Habitat for Humanity by collecting items for the Habitat  ReStore, volunteering at the ReStore, and engaging in rehabilitation work at the home of a local Vietnam veteran. On Sunday, volunteers worked on projects for Lutheran World Relief, assembling 312 school kits and 35 personal care kits, and tying 19 quilts. All of these volunteer opportunities were made possible and helped by the donations of dozens of people who provided time, work and donations in advance. The volunteers' bright yellow shirts provided an outward sign of the presence of God at work through Lutheran hands in Harrisburg.
St. Paul (Carlisle) hosted a Community Block Party on Sunday afternoon with free food, drinks, and snacks, music, and games and prizes for children and adults. The Block Party also featured tables and displays from public/human service agencies, including Project SHARE Food Bank; Carlisle CARES for the Homeless Program; Office of the Aging; Amend Program for Domestic Violence; The Union Fire Co.; Carlisle Police; Hope Station; Career Link; CPARC; Employment Skills Center; Health Services; and legal aid. The congregation provided information about programs and worship at St. Paul. At right is Interim Lead Pastor Rochelle Lewis with Claire and Tricia Hawks and therapy puppy-in-training, Agape. Below are (L-R) Jay Sexton, Deb Nelson, and former Bishop Carol Hendricks. Below right is St. Paul Youth Council member Beth Leonard.

 | Synod Youth Challenge Us to Help Can Hunger in Central PA
Middle school youth in our synod have taken the challenge to bring 250 cans of food to the Alive! Retreat at Camp Nawakwa, September 19-21. Why? This year's retreat them is "Hungry" AND these teens are challenging the rest of us to help the Central Pennsylvania Food Bank "Can Hunger" by lining Harrisburg's State Street and the Capitol steps with at least one ton of canned food. How can you help? Encourage your congregation to accept our synod youths' challenge by collecting canned goods in your congregation. Bring your offering of canned goods to the synod
office at the United Church Center by September 29th at 11:00 a.m. when the PA Food Bank will collect them in preparation for the next day's event.
We hope you'll also consider joining us on Tuesday, September 30th  as we line up our cans and remind our lawmakers to remember the hungry. It's one more chance to wear those yellow "God's Work. Our Hands. Our Voices." t-shirts, too! Please contact Sharron Blezard at 717-652-1852 ext. 102 if you will be joining synod staff and Lutheran Advocacy Ministry in Pennsylvania (LAMPa) for this important day of public witness and discipleship.
Our Lower Susquehanna Synod is the place where the hungry are fed as we have been fed by Christ. Let's join together to help "Can Hunger" in Central Pennsylvania!

In need of new tools to get your mission motor tuned? Join us for a leadership immersion day with the Rev. Dave Daubert that will give you practical tips, enhanced skills, and new vision for mission that starts at the heart of your congregation-from the very center of the faith we proclaim.   This event is for rostered leaders and congregational lay leaders and will be held Saturday, October , at St. Matthew Lutheran Church in York. FROM THE RESOURCE CENTER...
How well do we know the biblical narrative?  If recounting significant bible stories chronologically is a struggle, how might we teach our youth to engage the Good News?  Maybe you've heard this perspective before -- an effective way to learn something new is through teaching.  A new Resource Center arrival, Echo the Story 36, provides helpful platforms for meaningful reflection and dialogue by carefully stitching together stories of the bible.  The curriculum includes narrative scripts and imaginative listening exercises, fast-paced animated video recaps of previous stories, and hands-on creative projects to spark curiosity and renew interest in bible reading.  From Creation to Joseph, the first six sessions explore the book of Genesis in new ways.  Thirty additional sessions journey from Exodus to New Creation in Christ.  Whether for youth and family ministry or the Sunday school hour, Echo the Story is well-suited for small or large groups.  Contact the Resource Center to preview this engaging material!
In the meantime, we offer a variety of new faith formative resources and hope you will check them out soon!
 Yours in Christ,
 Deacon Marsha Roscoe

 For Adults
Animate: Practices, a seven-session adult introduction to the central practices of the Christian faith, is new in our Resource Center. Brian McLaren, Sara Miles, Phyllis Tickle and others reflect on prayer, food, worship, sacraments, money, service and community.  In each Animate: Practices session, the group watches a video featuring a leading voice from the Christian faith, spends time on personal reflection and journaling, and shares ideas with the participants.  Learn more: http://wearesparkhouse.org/adults/animate/practices/   Faithful Citizen: Living Responsibly in a Global Society is designed as a six-week, adult study to assist Christians in moving beyond individualism to act responsibly for all.  As a multimedia resource, Faithful Citizen addresses the interlocking global challenges of economics, ecology, security, and health using three concepts from the Christian tradition: covenant, community and the common good. Includes a Leader Guide, DVD with two segments for each of the six sessions and a Study Guide.  Learn more:  http://www.congregationinpubliclife.org/session1.html   For Youth Looking for an approach to Scripture that engages youth critically and creatively?  Invite youth to find their place within the Greater Story using Echo the Story 36.  Through storytelling, creative reflection, and dialogue, youth experience the fullness of the biblical narrative in 36 sessions.  Learn more: http://wearesparkhouse.org/teens/echothestory/36/ |

Four Last-Minute Stewardship Ideas The monthly "Brown-Bag Leadership Lunch" debuted on Thursday in the lunchroom of the Synod Office. BBLL attendees explored "Last Minute Stewardship Ideas." Although there is not sufficient time left in the year to plan and execute a comprehensive campaign, we can still get our congregations thoughtfully praying about and wrestling with matters of financial stewardship. All it takes is some creativity and dedication. This PDF document details four doable ideas discussed at the lunch.   BBLL participants also reviewed a handy list of church websites that offer free resources for congregations to plan and execute stewardship programs. Click here for that handy list.   The next "Brown Bag Leadership Lunch" will be from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Oct. 9. The topic will be "Becoming a Transformative Leader." What are the habits, ideas and attitudes that we can embrace to help us become leaders who can equip our churches to advance God's mission? |
