 An Invitation from Bishop Dunlop

For this year's annual Bishop's Convocation on September 18 I am delighted to welcome Dr. Jennifer McBride as our keynote presenter. One of the brightest young theological voices in North America, Dr. McBride sounds an important call to public witness and public discipleship. Because we have envisioned our synod as the place where the hungry are fed as we have been fed by Christ, Dr. McBride's presentation will inspire us to deepen and expand our commitment to those who hunger for food, for community, for hope, and for the good news of Jesus Christ. It is not enough to bring relief to those who hunger; it is our calling to be a prophetic voice of justice for the hungry.   Dr. McBride serves as the Board of Regents Endowed Chair of Ethics and assistant professor of religion at Wartburg College, a Lutheran school in Waverly, Iowa, and is the author of The Church for the World: A Theology of Public Witness (Oxford University Press, 2011) and co-editor of Bonhoeffer and King: Their Legacies and Import for Christian Social Thought (Fortress Press, 2010).   Integrating the theology, writing, and experiences of Dietrich Bonhoeffer and Martin Luther King, Jr., Dr. McBride's work is both compelling and challenging. You will find this young scholar's own story and experience inspiring, and her passion for justice and the gospel refreshing.    Our synod is working hard to give our leaders the training, education, resources, experiences and ideas needed to help our church to meet the needs of God's people for the 21st century. Dr. McBride is the second exciting and innovative speaker we have brought to our Synod this year, and she is a natural follow-up to the first - the Rev. Nadia Bolz-Weber, who spoke at CTIM earlier this year. The convocation's presentations and breakout sessions are designed to deepen the discussions we began at CTIM. You will leave this day better equipped to live out the gospel in your congregation and community, in our synod, and around the world.   I invite you to click here to read an interview with Dr. McBride published in The Christian Century, and I challenge each congregation to be represented by your rostered leaderhip and one or more congregational leaders at this important event. I look forward to spending time and worshiping with you at St. Matthew (York) on September 18. You may register by clicking the link below or by visiting our synod's website.   In Christ,   + Bishop James S. Dunlop   Click here to register and here to download a flyer to post in your congregation.  NOTE: Registration closes September 8, so don't delay. |
 | 'Brown-Bag Leadership Lunch' on Stewardship

 | 2015 ELCA Youth Gathering, "Rise Up Together," registration soft-opening scheduled for September 15

Congregational advisors planning to accompany youth to the 2015 ELCA Youth Gathering in Detroit should be aware that the event registration "soft-opening" is scheduled for September 15, 2014. What this means is that advisors will be able to visit the registration site and begin to input information on adult and youth participants who plan on attending the Gathering, scheduled for next summer, July 15-19, 2015. Once a person's online registration has been established, the advisor can return to that site to update the participants information at any time in anticipation of sending that information off to Chicago on the date of the actual registration opening, scheduled for October 15, 2014! The ELCA website has more details at: http://www.elca.org/youthgathering, or contact Charlie Roberts, synod Director for Children, Youth & Family Ministry and LSS Gathering Synod Coordinator with questions about registration or the actual Gathering. |

Four Big Mistakes that Lead to Pastor Burnout Why do so many Pastors burn out in ministry? There are lots of reasons, of course, but in this in this article Rick Warren (of "The Purpose-Driven Life" fame) identifies faulty thinking. Our thinking controls our emotions and our emotions control the way we act, says Warren. The problem is, when we're at an emotional low, we typically make four common mistakes. How many have you fallen into from time to time?   This is one of the offerings from pastors.com, Warren's website for ministry professionals, which is really chock full of useful, practical, down-to-earth guidance for leaders. Is everything perfect for our Lutheran context? No, but the vast bulk of the material has ready application. Sign up for his weekly e-newsletter, called "Ministry Toolbox" (Rob Blezard swears by it!)   |
