Swatera Creek Lutherans Work Toward Cooperative Ministry

The "Swatara Creek Lutheran Community" is emerging among congregations of the Hershey, Hummelstown, and Grantville area.  It all began with informal talk between two pastors who then expanded the conversation to include leaders from four other congregations. The goal was to find ways of doing cooperative ministry in the eastern part of the Harrisburg Conference of our Synod.

"Swatara Creek Lutherans" became an easy way to identify this group because all six congregations have some geographic location to the creek in Dauphin County. Moreover, the six congregations -- Holy Trinity in Hershey, Saint John in (Hoernerstown) Hummelstown, Saint Paul (Sand Hill) in the Derry Township, Shells in Grantville, Zion in Hummelstown, and Zion in Union Deposit -- are all within about eight miles of the Hummelstown area. Saint Peter Lutheran in Middletown has also joined in the talks and activities.

Soon the rostered leaders of the congregations invited lay leaders and interested congregation members to join the conversation. The latest result was a potluck dinner and sunset worship with Holy Communion on the evening on June 29 at the Grantville VFW picnic grounds. About 100 people from the congregations shared a meal, fellowship, and communion. They collected an offering for the Central Pennsylvania Food Bank, proving once again that our synod is "where the hungry are fed as we have been fed by Christ."

Earlier in the year the churches collaborated and collected soup on "Souper Bowl" Sunday and then met at the Central Pennsylvania Food Bank in Harrisburg to deliver the bounty.  "This was a success for our first mission together," said Pastor Kirk Kerns (St. John, Hoernerstown), "and it led to deeper discussions involving members from these congregations.

"We received some guidance along the way from Pastor Richard Jorgensen (Director for Evangelical Mission)," Kerns said, "but he encouraged us to move forward on our own to continue our conversations. We're planning to work together on a ministry for God's work. Our hands. Sunday."

Hungry for ALiVE?

The theme for ALIVE, our annual middle school youth event scheduled for September 19-21, is "Hungry." We'll discuss the ways we are fed by Jesus and equipped to go out and help meet the spiritual, emotional, and practical needs of the hungry in our world. But youth can also count on the fun and fellowship activities they have come to expect at ALiVE, like campfires, a dance, GaGa and other games, outdoor worship and upbeat large group. Registrations have opened and are limited to the first 250, so register today, or download printable posters, bulletin inserts or other materials at: http://www.lss-elca.org/youth-family/events/alive/

Make It Simple

As Lutherans, we know that just talking about money in a congregation is hard enough - to say nothing of actually asking for God's people to support the work of the church. To help, our denomination has put together a wonderful assortment of stewardship resources to guide congregational leaders in making financial support of the church a key element in the work of disciples. It's called Make It Simple, and the resource offers lots of downloads - videos, discussion guides, class outlines, tips for stewardship with children, sermon guides, hints and tip sheets - everything you need to plan a stewardship campaign perfect for your church. It follows four themes: Following Jesus, Facing the Truth, Acting Together and Sharing enough.
