ELCA Advocates for Unaccompanied Children Entering the United States
CHICAGO (ELCA) - As a church that pursues justice, peace and human dignity for all people, the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA) is committed to helping the thousands of unaccompanied children coming to the United States to escape violence and difficult situations in their home countries. To address this crisis, ELCA members are working through Lutheran Immigration and Refugee Service to help find foster care for these children. "As people of faith, we are reminded that among the children who had to flee across borders because of threat of life was our very own Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. When children flee across two international borders alone, the community of Jesus - the church - must accompany them," said the Rev. Stephen Bouman, executive director, ELCA congregational and synodical mission. "Children on the Run," a report by the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, states that the number of children "making the treacherous journey alone and unaccompanied, has doubled each year since 2011." According to the report, one of the main factors contributing to this increase is the rise of violence in Mexico and Central America. Lutheran Immigration and Refugee Service estimates that 80,000 children will seek safety in the United States during this fiscal year. The agency, based in Baltimore, is one of the nation's leaders in welcoming and advocating for refugees and immigrants, working on behalf of the ELCA. It is one of two organizations called upon by the U.S. Office of Refugee Settlement to help place unaccompanied children in foster care. "The ELCA, through its partnership with Lutheran Immigration and Refugee Service, is already involved through its congregations, social ministry organizations, advocacy, and Lutheran Immigration Refugee Service affiliates on the ground," said Bouman. "We are pursuing both the short-term efforts at achieving safety and relevant social services for these children of God, as well as long-term systemic solutions to stem the flow of children cast adrift." "When Lutheran Immigration and Refugee Service started working with unaccompanied migrant children in 2005, it was unthinkable that several thousand children would make the dangerous journey across the border on their own," said Linda Hartke, president and CEO of Lutheran Immigration and Refugee Service. "To see that number skyrocket, potentially up to 80,000 children this year, is truly a humanitarian crisis." "The children making this arduous trek north are fleeing violence, abuse and deep poverty and hunger, and are in desperate need of help and protection," said Bouman. "Many are trying to reunite with family members here in the United States. By the time they cross the United States border, many have been robbed, raped or abused. The need is so large and current resources cannot keep pace." Click here to read the entire story on the ELCA website.

Pam Drenner Leaving Synod Staff to Play a New Role in Ministry
Lower Susquehanna Synod Director of Resource Ministries, Pamela B. Drenner, is turning a new page in her vocation and will be leaving our synod team at the end of August to begin serving as Director of Music at St. James Lutheran Church in Lebanon. She will also continue to serve as musician at Zion Lutheran Church in Lebanon.
"We are deeply saddened to lose such a valuable resource in our synod staff family," Bishop James Dunlop said. "Pam has been at the center of so many aspects of our shared ministry for the last 16 and half years, including the resource center, and the coordination of synod assemblies, CTIM, and many of our educational efforts.
"And at the same time we are happy for Pam as she begins a new venture in music ministry in the Lebanon Ministry Cooperative," he added. "She will be a great asset in that ministry initiative. She is gifted leader in the church and we wish her well as she moves to this new area of ministry."
"I have been blessed by ministry with this synod," Pam said. "My collaborative work with colleagues, lay leaders and clergy has been rewarding, and I value the relationships developed through resource and programmatic ministry. However, I now feel called to focus my time and energy to music ministry at a congregational level. Church music is my passion, and I am excited about the potential and possibilities for breaking ground in music ministry with the Lebanon Lutheran Cooperative Ministry."
So while we're singing the blues here in Harrisburg, we are grateful for Pam's faithful service, her dedication to faith formation, education, music, and ministry, and we wish her all the best. Thank you, Pam Drenner, for the difference you have made in so many lives!

Be a Community Life Volunteer at the ELCA National Youth Gathering
The ELCA Youth Gathering is now about one year away. Young adults and adults who are looking for a way to serve at the event, but who cannot serve as congregational youth advisors, may want to consider Community Life! Community Life volunteers serve in hotels as liaisons between the Gathering and the hotel staff and between the Gathering and the congregational participants staying in that hotel. They provide care, intervene in emergencies, and sometimes do crisis intervention. But mostly, they walk alongside youth and adults who are participating in the Gathering in unique and powerful ways. This year, all Community Life Volunteers will have an opportunity to lead programming in hotels, as well. To volunteer or to learn more about this opportunity, visit: http://www.elca.org/YouthGathering/Registration/Volunteers.

5 Cultural Norms that Threaten the Church
Jesus calls us to be in the world but not of the world, and that's a hard line to negotiate when our people are pulled in all sorts of directions. Our North American culture is so pervasive that we may be blind to the more subtle and subversive influences that are having a greater impact on the church than the front-burner issues that consume us. This article from churchleaders.com lists five often overlooked cultural norms that are contrary to the Kingdom and that, unknowingly , many of us may support.
