 St. Barnabas Center Needs You!

Want to make a real difference in the lives of local Harrisburg youth? Become involved NOW and support the St. Barnabas Center for Ministry, a joint program of Lower Susquehanna Lutherans and our Episcopalian sisters and brothers.

The need has never been greater to keep this important program in operation, yet full funding is not in place for this summer's ministry. For 21 years, St. Barnabas Center for Ministry has provided for eight weeks each summer an all-day faith-based Summer Program for children ages 7-12 in Uptown Harrisburg. Without additional financial support and sponsorship, the board faces making difficult decisions about cuts to programming or elimination of services. At a time when so many resources and opportunities are out of reach for the most vulnerable of our neighbors, the St. Barnabas Center has been a critical place of nurture, instruction, and community for today's children and tomorrow's future leaders.

How can you help?

  • Sponsor a Child (or children!): Your generous gift of $100 sponsors a child for one week; $800 will sponsor a child for the summer.
  • Pray: Commit to regular prayer for the success of the ministry and for the young children the St. Barnabas Center serves.
  • Share: Tell your congregations, community groups, and friends about this need. Ask your congregation to consider a special offering. Pass a colorful plastic sand pail to collect gifts on a Sunday morning. What you would spend for a movie ticket and concession-stand snacks, for example, will provide a full day of programming and lunch for a child.
  • Give: Donations in any amount are welcome and needed.

Make checks payable to "St. Barnabas" and mail to 248 Seneca Street, Harrisburg, PA 17110.Thank you for helping to keep our precious children safe this summer.

ELCA World Hunger Education and Networking Grants Available

ELCA World Hunger Education and Networking grants are available to support local efforts to educate and mobilize ELCA congregations, groups, and/or synods.  This grant program supports engaging educational and networking opportunities focused on the root causes of and solutions to hunger.

For the 2014 year,  a particular interest is directed to education proposals that focus on increasing youth and young adult engagement; address racism, sexism and classism within domestic poverty; and increase awareness of the experience of domestic poverty.  Education funding can be used for events, educational programs or the development of shareable resources.  For networking proposals, congregation-based and synod-based hunger leader trainings will be prioritized.

For details about submitting proposals and who may qualify, click hereProposals will be reviewed throughout the year. All proposals must be received by December 31, 2014 to be considered for funding. Direct additional questions to hunger@elca.org.

Summerfest: Sing. Play. Worship. Eat. Enjoy.

Summer is coming ,and the Office for Children, Youth & Family Ministry invites you to our second annual Summerfest event on Saturday, July 26, at Camp Nawakwa's Upper Camp Pavilion. A multi-generational event, the day includes a full picnic meal, games, crafts, hikes, prayer and labyrinth walks, and this year water games and the pool, all for only $10 per person. The whole day culminates in a mini-concert and worship, led by Pastor Dana Bloch-Hanson. Our musical guest is Jonathan Rundman, a singer/songwriter, whose unique blend of pop/rock is cool and easy. Jonathan will also be appearing at next summer's ELCA Youth Gathering, so meet and hear him at Summerfest first! Click here to check out Jonathan's music. To register, click here to print a registration form from the synod website.

Training/Education Link of the Week

Our synod grows stronger because its dedicated leaders continue to learn new ways of approaching ministry and serving God's people. This week Carings & Sharings is launching a new weekly feature -- a link to a video, article, podcast, powerpoint presentation or other media that will help our leaders embrace new ideas and learn new insights into ministry.

This Week: Web videos of talks that Peter Steinke gave on the topic The Balancing Act: The Congregation As A Healthy Emotional System to ministers in California. A Lutheran pastor, Steinke is a speaker and author whose field of expertise is how emotional systems can keep a congregation stuck in unhealthy patterns. His books include "Healthy Congregations: A Systems Approach," "How Your Church Family Works: Understanding Congregations as Emotional Systems," and "Congregational Leadership in Anxious Times: Being Calm and Courageous No Matter What."
