This one-day event is designed for all who work with adults under 40, for congregational leaders, and for anyone who is interested in | | | Chick Lane |
stewardship education, trends in giving and generosity, and fresh approaches to helping people live faithfully in all aspects of life.   Keynote speakers for the day are the Rev. Charles "Chick" Lane and Grace Duddy. Chick is the author of Ask, Thank, Tell: Improving Stewardship Ministry in Your Congregation.  He currently works as a consultant with Kairos and Associates. Previously, he served as Director of the Center for Stewardship Leaders at Luther Seminary and the Director for Stewardship Key Leaders in the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America. Grace is the Executive Director for Operations at Kairos and Associates, Inc.  Previously, she worked with Chick Lane as the Assistant Director of the Center for Stewardship Leaders at Luther Seminary.  She is a self-proclaimed Millennial and 2012 graduate of Luther Seminary with an M. A. in Congregational Mission and Leadership.  She is the author of the year-round stewardship resource recently published by the ELCA, Stewards of God's Love as well as a blog on frugality called "Classy Frugalist."   | | | Grace Duddy |
In their first presentation Grace and Chick will introduce the topic of "Stewardship with Adults under 40" by describing their own experiences with this important topic as well as exploring some generational characteristics of this age group. Their second presentation will provide practical suggestions for engaging adults under 40 on their stewardship journey.  These will come from Grace's research with young adults and from congregations who have found effective ways to help adults under 40 grow as stewards. Rostered leaders from across the Lower Susquehanna and Delaware-Maryland Synods will provide practical suggestions and ideas from their own experiences and contexts.     The event is presented by the Delaware-Maryland and Lower Susquehanna Synods. The cost is $20 and includes lunch and resources. The first session begins at 9:00 a.m., and the event concludes at 4:00 p.m. For more information or to register, click here. In case you were wondering, you don't have to be under 40 to attend. Bring an open mind and a willing spirit to learn and grow through new insights into a critically important topic. |
 | ELCA Presiding Bishop to Visit Christ Lutheran Church, Gettysburg

The Rev. Elizabeth Eaton, Presiding Bishop of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA) will visit Christ Lutheran Church, Gettysburg, and preside at worship on Palm Sunday, April 13, 2014.    Eaton, who serves as the chief pastor for the largest Lutheran church body in America, will lead services of Holy Communion at 8:15 a.m. and 10:30 a.m. at Christ Church, located at 30 Chambersburg Street in Gettysburg.
"It is a joy and honor to welcome Bishop Eaton to Gettysburg" noted Christ Lutheran Pastor and ELCA Church Council member Stephen Herr.  "Gettysburg's role in the history of Lutheranism in America has been a significant one.   Both Gettysburg Seminary and Gettysburg College are among the oldest Lutheran higher education institutions.  Christ Lutheran Church, founded in 1836 and once known as the College Church, served as a place of worship and support for both communities.  All three institutions were founded by Samuel Simon Schmucker.   Between the Sunday services Bishop Eaton will discuss the many ministries of the ELCA, which is one of the largest Christian denominations in the United States, with about 4 million members in nearly 10,000 congregations across the 50 states and in the Caribbean region.  Bishop Eaton is the fourth presiding bishop of the ELCA and was elected to a six year term at the 2013 ELCA Churchwide Assembly in Pittsburgh.   Eaton's travel to Gettysburg also coincides with a meeting of the presidents of the eight ELCA Seminaries, including Gettysburg Seminary President Michael Cooper-White and Luther Seminary President-Elect Robin Steinke.  Steinke is the current Dean at Gettysburg Seminary and will assume the presidency at Luther in St. Paul, Minnesota on June 1.  Both Cooper-White and Steinke are members at Christ Lutheran Church.   Bishop Eaton earned her Master of Divinity degree from Harvard Divinity School (Cambridge, Mass.) and  Bachelor of Arts degree in music education from the College of Wooster (in Wooster, Ohio).   Ordained in 1981, she served several parishes in the Northeastern Ohio Synod and was elected bishop of that synod in 2006 and reelected in 2013. Her husband, the Rev. T. Conrad Selnick, an Episcopal priest, is the Vice President for Advancement and Church Relations at Bexley Seabury Federation (based in location).   All worship services at Christ Church are open to the public and the congregation welcomes visitors to worship on Palm/Passion Sunday and all other Sundays.  Palm Sunday is the traditional beginning of Holy Week for Christians around the world.  It is a week they recall Jesus' death and resurrection as the revelation of God's triumph over sin and death. |
