Memory Cafe to Provide Food, Fellowship, and Comfort
Vicar Martha Boyd and Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church in Camp Hill will be hosting some very special guests on Friday, May 9, for an afternoon of stories, sharing, entertainment, and a light meal. The Memory Café at Trinity is an event specifically designed for individuals with mild to moderate dementia, their caregivers, and anyone who worries about memory problems.
"The Memory Cafe idea was started in the United Kingdom," says Boyd, "and was most recently highlighted in the November issue of The Lutheran Magazine .
"It provides a way to reach out, in care and concern, to a group whose numbers grow daily -- those diagnosed with some form of Dementia, and their caregivers," Boyd added.
Alzheimer's and other related Dementia are often misunderstood diseases; as a result, relationships are changed and sometimes abandoned. The church is challenged to include those living with the diagnosis, as members find it difficult to attend worship services, but long to be included in the church community.
Life's journey continues for those living with memory loss, and the Memory Café instills a sense of normalcy and remembrance for the diagnosed person and the caregiver(s). Having the café in a church re-establishes connectedness to a familiar place in their lives, and to each other.
"It is our hope that sharing a meal and music in fellowship, will provide comfort and enjoyment, in a safe and loving environment," said Boyd.
The event runs from 4:00 - 5:30 p.m. For more information call 717-737-9921 or e-mail Martha.Boyd@trinitycamphill.org. Registration is limited to the first 50 people making reservations. Click here to download a flyer.
The Memory Cafe at Trinity, Camp Hill, is one more way Lower Susquehanna Synod Lutherans are feeding others as we have been fed by Christ. A good meal, God's love, and the care of neighbors nourishes body, mind, and spirit.
