Taking Lent to the Streets on Ash Wednesday
"From dust you were created; to dust you will return." These are the convicting words that most of us associate with worship on the first day of Lent, along with the imposition of an ashen cross on our foreheads. Traditionally, this event takes place in the nave on Ash Wednesday in quiet and somber reflection. The public witness occurs only when those who have attended worship wear their ashes at work, at the store, or on the street.
But what about taking the imposition of ashes itself into the street and to the people who can't or won't be able to gather at the appointed time for worship? After all, we are sent from worship into the world, so it makes sense to take worship with us and meet people where they need to be met.
This year, some of our Lower Susquehanna Synod congregations decided to do just that, taking ashes and word to commuters and pedestrians across our synod. From a commuter lot outside Harrisburg to a parking lot in Biglerville and on the sidewalks of Lebanon, the sign of the cross was made again and again.
Pastor Nicole Wachter (Zion, Dauphin) presided over an "Ash and Dash" service at the Rt. 22/322 Park and Ride for mid-state commuters who would have otherwise been unable to participate in an Ash Wednesday Liturgy. The simple service even drew the attention of a news crew from Channel 27, an ABC affiliate in Harrisburg.
Pastors Andy Evenson and Bob Ierien bundled up with layers under their albs and stoles and took to the streets of Lebanon bright and early outside of Salem Lutheran Church. Their "Ashes to Go" service had the double effect of reaching out to those who might not otherwise be able to attend worship while at the same time meeting some of the folks in the neighborhood around Salem.
Pastor Bob Ierien joked in a Facebook post later that day "As proof that Pastor Andy Evenson and I need adult supervision: it took Pastor Gretchen Ierien's suggestion for us to realize that it would be warmer if we moved down and stood in the sun!" Sun or no sun, "Ashes to Go" made quite an impression on the neighborhood and provided good exposure for this new ministry cooperative.
Meanwhile, in Adams County, Pastor Susan McCarthy provided a drive-by ash imposition for the residents of Biglerville. The parking lot at St. Paul, a congregation she serves along with nearby Benders Lutheran, provided a perfect setting--located behind the library and near a bank--for folks to drive through and receive their ashes. An article in The Gettysburg Times helped to direct traffic to them, although some residents simply saw the sign and stopped.
Taking ashes into the street is one simple and visible way of sharing the faith and feeding those who are hungry for a glimpse of God's amazing grace and abundant love.

Williams Valley Summer Food Program receives $5,000 "Matthew 25: Neighbors in Need" Challenge Grant
Thrivent Financial for Lutherans Foundation grant aids efforts to support physical, emotional and spiritual needs in community
The Summer Food Program in Wiliamstown, PA, recently received a $5,000 "Lutheran Community Matthew 25: Neighbors in Need" challenge grant from the Thrivent Financial for Lutherans Foundation. The funding was awarded to the Summer Food Program based on its effectiveness in addressing physical, emotional and /or spiritual needs in the local community such as food, clothing, shelter, fellowship, and care for the sick based on Jesus' words in Matthew 25: 35-36.
For every dollar raised by The Summer Food Program from donors by Mar. 31, 2014, the Thrivent Financial for Lutherans Foundation will provide an additional 50 cents-up to $5,000-in support of the organization's ministry.
"We are delighted to assist The Summer Food Program through this grant, said Richard Kleven, vice president of the Thrivent Financial for Lutherans Foundation. "We trust that this support will strengthen the churches of the Williams Valley outreach/ministry to those they serve."
The Summer Food Program provides lunch and activities for children one day a week during the summer months and is designed to meet the needs of children who might otherwise go hungry when school in not in session. Donations to this program may be sent to Immanuel Lutheran Church, 141 East St, Williamstown, PA 17098; please write Summer Food Program in the memo line. This is one more way Lower Susquehanna Synod Lutherans are feeding others as we have been fed by Christ.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION FROM CHRIST LUTHERAN CHURCH HEALTH MINISTRIES
Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,
For over a decade the Health Ministries of Christ Lutheran Church in Harrisburg has been privileged to receive support from an ecumenical array of congregations. With your help we are able to provide free health care, ESL and literacy classes and many items necessary to stay healthy and dignified to low income neighbors in Harrisburg.
Mission of Mercy, a wholly separate organization featuring a mobile medical van that has been providing care at the church, will be relocating to the St. Francis Soup Kitchen April 4. Mission of Mercy stated a desire to engage in fundraising activities for their work that the Congregational Council declined to allow to occur inside Christ Lutheran Church.
This relocation will not have any appreciable effect on Health Ministries. Of the 20,000 patient visits provided at Christ Church last year, 7.8% of them were provided by Mission of Mercy. Holy Spirit's Medical Outreach Service and the church's Prenatal Care, Dental and Urgi clinics accounted for the rest.
I am concerned though, that folks might not know that Health Ministries is different and apart from Mission of Mercy. Lest there be any confusion, donations to Mission of Mercy or their "Harrisburg Campaign for Care" do not support the Health Ministries of Christ Church.
Should you have any questions, I'd be happy to answer them. Thank you for the support you have shown us over the years.
Rev. Jody Silliker, RN

DIVEST AT THE OUTLET Do you want to lower your congregation's energy costs and protect God's creation at once? Consider the joining the Community Power Project, a joint effort of Pennsylvania Interfaith Power & Light and Groundswell. Through this project faith communities, community organizations, schools, and even small businesses can buy 100% clean electricity in their existing budgets. Groundswell joins congregations together to create a large electricity-buying group. Each congregation still gets its own electricity on its own bill, but because they joined the same purchasing group, they can get a good deal on electricity and insist that the electricity they buy supports their values - that it doesn't pollute the air or water we all share with each other and with future generations. For more information, follow this link:

SIGN UP YOUR CONGREGATION NOW FOR LUTHERAN ENERGY STEWARDS INITIATIVE
ELCA congregations and camps can apply now ( application deadline is May 1, 2014, with the program to begin in June) for the Energy Stewards Initiative, a one- to two-year national program beginning this June through Lutherans Restoring Creation. The program helps congregations track and reduce energy use on an online platform, lower their carbon footprint with the help of an action plan, and free up funds for other ministries. For $10.00 a month (scholarships available), the program offers an online platform and bi-monthly webinars to make available the shared wisdom of program leaders and other participants. Apply, learn more, or sign up for a Tuesday, March 25, 2014 (7:00 p.m. CT) informational webinar at www.lutheransrestoringcreation.org. Lutherans Restoring Creation is a grass roots organization devoted to promoting care for creation in all institutions and organizations in the ELCA: congregations, seminaries, colleges, synods, and outdoor ministries. LRC sponsors Energy Stewards Initiative. The modest fee covers the cost of the online platform to track energy use and follow an action plan.
