The Fine Art of Appreciating Volunteers
by Pastor Kate Shroeder
Bob and Jan Marten are a force to be reckoned with! Active in mission, stewardship, as Sunday School teachers, and faithful members of St. Matthew, Hanover, they also lead the congregation's Thank You ministry. Four to six times per year they place framed signs on easels throughout the frequented areas of the church, thanking various people, groups and ministries for their service, participation and support.
With a new Hospitality Desk in place (built by one of our fine members), they have helped to make our Gathering Place more friendly and welco ming -- complete with framed pictures outlining how people can volunteer. Most recently, they filled a jar with candy featuring labels with slogans such as "Our CUP Runneth Over with Great Volunteers Like You!" (Peanut Butter Cups) and, "You Bring Great JOY to our Volunteer Ministry" (Almond Joy), for volunteers to enjoy! While the members of St. Matthew are, indeed, grateful for all of our volunteers, we are also grateful for Bob and Jan's witness and lessons in appreciating those who serve!
Editor's Note: St. M atthew, Hanover, is welcoming more than 600 guests for CTIM this Saturday. Be sure to check out their new Hospitality Desk. Thank you for the warm welcome and gracious hospitality!

World Malaria Day -- Save the Date!
World Malaria Day is coming up on April 25, and it's another great opportunity to do something big for the ELCA Malaria Campaign. Thanks to the folks at our churchwide office, we have all the resources you need to celebrate World Malaria Day in your congregation. For the last several years, the ELCA observed World Malaria Day by dedicating an entire week to raising funds and awareness for our companions' programs. To date, we have joined hands in 12 African countries to help fight malaria, and we have seen great progress. This year, let's make it 13.We are looking to our Lower Susquehanna Synod congregations to join with other synods and help take the ELCA Malaria Campaign work into the next country - Namibia. If we raise $250,000 across the ELCA, we'll have enough to kick-start programing in Namibia, the last country in the Malaria Campaign rollout plan.Join thousands of ELCA members across this church and millions of people around the world in taking action in April. Please consider observing this day by taking a special offering for the ELCA Malaria Campaign on Sunday, April 27, 2014. Click here for special World Malaria Day resources that will help you activate your congregation to learn about malaria, the ELCA Malaria Campaign, our work in Namibia and more.Together we are making great strides and saving precious lives. Thank you for making a difference. Note: Don't forget about March Mania! It's not too late to plan a "net" event to raise awareness and funds for our Malaria Campaign. Visit our synod's website and the ELCA website for more ideas.

GLOBAL CONNECTIONS
Tanzania: Water, precious water In some places in the world, such as the semi-arid regions of Tanzania, life revolves around getting water. Fetching water can consume much of a day, and too often the water isn't clean. ELCA missionaries in Tanzania, Joe and Deborah Troester, are working to help change that. See www.ELCA.org/News-and-Events/blogs/HandInHand/404.
Teachers needed in Eastern Europe
Volunteer to teach English language, literature or other subjects to students in 8th to 13th grades in one of several church-affiliated schools in Slovakia or Poland. See http://download.ELCA.org/ELCA%20Resource%20Repository/Teach_in_Central_Europe.pdf.
News from Rwanda
Pastor Kate Warn, who most recently served as interim at Holy Trinity (Lebanon), is now coordinating a new site for ELCA Young Adults in Global Mission in Kigali, Rwanda. Here's her latest newsletter for you to download and share. Please keep Pastor Kate and all of our ELCA missionaries and their families in your prayers.

DIVEST AT THE OUTLET Do you want to lower your congregation's energy costs and protect God's creation at once? Consider the joining the Community Power Project, a joint effort of Pennsylvania Interfaith Power & Light and Groundswell. Through this project faith communities, community organizations, schools, and even small businesses can buy 100% clean electricity in their existing budgets. Groundswell joins congregations together to create a large electricity-buying group. Each congregation still gets its own electricity on its own bill, but because they joined the same purchasing group, they can get a good deal on electricity and insist that the electricity they buy supports their values - that it doesn't pollute the air or water we all share with each other and with future generations. For more information, follow this link:

INTERESTED IN LEGISLATION AND JUSTICE ISSUES?
Here's an opportunity to learn more about new legislation being introduced that will require bills moving through the Pennsylvania state legislature to amend the Pennsylvania Criminal or Sentencing Code to be accompanied by a racial impact statement. Debating legislation with a racial impact statement can provide greater insight for legislators as to the bill's benefits and problems as well as provide more transparency for Pennsylvanians to know how legislation will impact their lives. You can read more about racial impact statements here.
Join our United Methodist friends and other faithful Pennsylvanians for a conference call on Wednesday, March 19, at 3:00 p.m. EST. The number to call is 605-475-4800, and the code is 540390. The purpose of the conference call is to discuss the legislation and talk about strategy for supporting and moving this positive legislation forward. The call is hosted by the General Board of Church and Society, United Methodist Church.
