Barner's Lutheran Church "Bites Back" at Malaria
by Melissa Hixson
St. John's (Barner's) Lutheran Church in Liverpool is known as "The Little Church with the Big Heart." A small congregation of about 50 members, they respond in a big way when they hear a calling to serve. In response to the ELCA Malaria Campaign's goal to raise $15 million by 2015, the congregation set their own goal to reach $5,000 by 2015. To date, this dedicated group has raised $4,052.49 through hoagie sales, a Chinese Auction, and the efforts of a 9-year-old girl who turned her love of bracelet making into an opportunity to help with fund raising.
 | Emily shows one of her bracelets. |
When Emily Hixson turned nine last April, she spent some of her birthday money on a new hobby...making clay bracelets. From square blocks of clay, she creates, bakes and beads beautiful bracelets of just about any color combination imaginable. When Emily heard about her congregation's malaria campaign, "Barner's Bites Back," she decided that she wanted to help. A portion of each bracelet she sells goes directly toward the malaria campaign. So far Emily has raised $83.00. When asked why she wanted to help, she said, "Because I know that children in Africa are dying every 60 seconds from malaria, and I want to help them have a healthier, longer life."
Emily is correct. Every 60 seconds, a child dies from malaria complications. Through the efforts of the ELCA Malaria Campaign, families in Africa are provided with insecticide-treated mosquito nets, medications, diagnostic testing, community education, removal of mosquito breeding grounds and training of health professionals and volunteers. Emily feels blessed to be able to help and to be a part of such a meaningful campaign that can change and save lives.

Go! Challenge Update
At the end of January, 21.19% (57) of eligible individuals participating in the Portico insurance plan had completed their online health assessment. We still need 118 individuals to complete the assessment in order for all 227 of our congregations to receive a 2% discount on insurance premiums. Additionally, if we make our goal, our synod will receive an additional 1% in cash (about $22,000) to fund wellness initiatives within our synod, including a wellness retreat for rostered leaders. The total benefit to our synod is around $66,000, plus each participant who completes the assessment earns an automatic $150 toward his or her annual deductible. If you have not already completed your assessment, please do so. If you have, please encourage your colleagues and other leaders to do so. It's good for our personal health, it's good stewardship, and it's good for the financial health of our synod.
Watch Bishop Jim Dunlop's message about health and importance of the Portico Health Assessment in the window above or on our synod's YouTube channel. Click here for more information about the Go! Challenge.

Lutheran Confirmands Make Pennies Count

Last week we reported results from some Lower Susquehanna Synod congregations that participated in this year's Souper Bowl of Caring. First Lutheran Church in New Oxford didn't stop with one Sunday. They kept their "penny war" going for an extra week because of the strong response. A project coordinated by the congregation's Confirmation Class, this year's Penny War netted $407.61 for the New Oxford Food Pantry. Thanks to another group of Lower Susquehanna Synod Lutherans who are feeding others as they have been fed by Christ!

The Fund is a partner in your ministry. If you wish to learn more about a building consultation, financing a loan and how congregations and individuals can invest in the Fund, please contact Pr. Mark Wimmer, Regional Manager, Mission Investment Fund, ELCA: mark.wimmer@elca.org or 267-203-1137.
