Bishop James S. Dunlop Installed September 28 in York

Last Saturday, September 28, was a day filled with anticipation, joy, laughter, and celebration, but most of all it was a time of thanksgiving and worship as ELCA Presiding Bishop Mark Hanson installed The Reverend James S. Dunlop as Bishop of our Lower Susquehanna Synod. Hundreds of family, friends, rostered leaders, bishops, and ecumenical representatives filled the pews of the cavernous sanctuary of St. Matthew Lutheran Church in York for the service of Holy Eucharist that included a stirring message from Bishop Hanson.
"Do not fear," said Bishop Hanson, addressing Bishop Dunlop. "There are the three most important words in your ministry." Urging all the baptized to remember their call to share the good news, Bishop Hanson asked all who had them to turn on their cell phones and call or text someone to tell them the good news and that Jesus loves them. "Our baptismal calling is to serve all people," the Presiding Bishop stressed.
"O, Bishop Dunlop, be a midwife for the gospel. Remind
people of what they already know, encourage them," he added. "I pray for the anointing of all of you."
Special music was provided by the St. Matthew Praise Band, Katelyn and Megan McClinton, and members of the Lutheran Theological Seminary at Gettysburg and St. Matthew's choirs, St. Matthew Reformation Brass, and St. Matthew Jazz Ensemble. The Rev. Dr. Stephen P. Folkemer and Jonathan Noel were directors of music and organists.
Friends and family of Bishop Dunlop also took part in the service as cantor, lectors, communion assistants,
and flagon bearers. Retired Lower Susquehanna Synod Bishop B. Penrose Hoover served as Gospeller, and Presiding Bishop Mark Hanson preached. Twelve bishops participated in the laying on of hands, and the congregation was invited to lay hands on one another and offer a blessing.
Following worship, those present were invited to continue the celebration at a reception sponsored by Lutheran Social Services of South Central Pennsylvania and
coordinated by Sodexo Food Services. The invitations and worship booklets were made possible through generous financial support by Thrivent Financial. The congregation of St. Matthew worked tirelessly to make the event run smoothly, and many other volunteers gave significant amounts of time and talent to this effort.
Words from the third verse of the sending hymn, "Praise to the Lord, the Almighty," provide a fitting reminder for our Lower Susquehanna Synod as we continue this journey under the guidance and leadership of Bishop Dunlop:
"Praise to the Lord; who will prosper your work and defend you;/surely his goodness and mercy shall daily attend you. Ponder anew what the Almighty can do/if with his love he befriend you."

May God be ever with us as we go out to serve and feed others as Christ has fed us.

Don't Miss Out on "Technology: Tools for MIssion"
 | | | Eric C. Shafer - Senior Vice President, Odyssey Networks |

The way we communicate has changed more in the last decade than ever before. Christians need to learn about, understand, and harness these new tools and media for the sake of the gospel.
As Meredith Gould, author of The Social Media Gospel: Sharing the Good News in New Ways, writes: "Christ has no online presence but yours,/ No blog; no Facebook page but yours,/ Yours are the tweets through which love touches this world, /Yours are the posts through which the gospel is shared,/ Yours are the updates through which hope is shared" (p. 8). Don't miss this morning of discovery and discussion about the new media "space" that congregations can use for ministry and mission. Through presentation and group discussion participants will identify new ministry practices that are relevant and do-able!

Keynote presenter, Eric C. Shafer, is widely recognized for his work in communications ministry. Breakout sessions will provide practical tips and suggestions for integrating media and ministry in a variety of settings. Join us for a productive and informative morning at Trinity Lutheran Church, Camp Hill. For only $10, you'll learn how to advance and optimize your congregation's digital ministry and enjoy fellowship with folks from around our synod.

...prayers are requested from Pastor Chad Rimmer, serving as an ELCA missionary in Senegal: An update on Dakar Water...    First of all, I thank you, friends for your thoughts and prayers that many of you have shared over these past two weeks concerning the water situation in Dakar.  I am happy to update some positive news, after almost 19 days now of the water shortage. Evidently, the replacement pipe is on site. That means the installation could happen in a day or two and schools in Yoff are planning to open tomorrow. Now, this comes with caution regarding the water pressure returning to the old pipes downstream that have sat empty for two weeks, as well as the flushing of stagnant water into homes. So, please continue to pray as we are not quite out of the woods yet. I also give thank for the season of Creationtide that is taking place in many congregations during these weeks of Autumn. Please remember to give thanks for the basic elements that sustain life, to pray for the humble care and conservation of God's creation, and for justice to roll down like streams in the way we steward this gift of life.

... prayers for Pastor Cliff Eshbach (Holy Spirit, Lancaster), who continues to recover from surgery. Please pray for healing and full recovery. Messages of care and concern can be sent to Pastor Eshbach at ceshbach@hotmail.com.
