Synod Bishop James S. Dunlop has selected a Lower Susquehanna Synod clergy couple to serve as his assistants, effective Nov. 1.
The Reverends Robert and Sharron Blezard will work in the synod office alongside Bishop Dunlop; the Rev. Thomas McKee, assistant to the bishop and Synod Secretary, and the Rev. Richard E.T. Jorgensen, director of evangelical mission.
The Blezards are the second clergy couple to serve concurrently as assistants to the bishop since the Synod was formed in 1988. The Rev. Thomas McKee and his wife, the Rev. Judith McKee, served together for six years, until the Rev. Judith McKee left in 2007 to serve as pastor of Union Evangelical Lutheran Church in York.
Both of the bishop assistant appointees were ordained in 2006. The Rev. Sharron Blezard has served a half-time call at Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church in Rouzerville since August 2011. Since June she has also served half-time as communications specialist for the Synod. The Rev. Sharron Blezard previously served Trinity Lutheran Church, Hixson, Tenn., and the Sheyenne-Oberon Area Ministry in North Dakota.
A master of divinity graduate of the Lutheran Theological Seminary at Gettysburg, the Rev. Sharron Blezard is a second-career pastor with extensive experience as an English teacher on the high school and college levels, as a development director for nonprofit organizations and writer and editor. She is a writer and editor for the Stewardship of Life Institute headquartered at Gettysburg Seminary.
The Rev. Robert Blezard has served Trinity Lutheran Church, Arendtsville, since ordination in February 2006. An MDiv graduate of Boston University School of Theology, a Methodist seminary, he completed his "Lutheran year" studies at Gettysburg Seminary and the Lutheran Theological Seminary at Philadelphia.
A second-career pastor, the Rev. Robert Blezard worked as a writer and editor for 26 years, including a post as an editor at The Lutheran magazine in Chicago. Since 2000 he has worked as study guide editor for the magazine. He also works as content editor and writer for the Stewardship of Life Institute.
The Blezards have four children: Elspeth Allsopp of Minneapolis, Minn.; Margaret Lucas, in college in London; and Kaleigh and Kristian Blezard of Gettysburg

"I am calling these 'opening conversations' because I want to be in conversation with people throughout the synod on a regular basis and so this is the beginning of our life and conversations together."
Events will be held from 3:00 - 5:00 p.m. and are scheduled for:
- October 20, St. James Lutheran, 109 York Street, Gettysburg
- November 3, Grace Lutheran, 1610 Carlisle Road, Camp Hill
- November 10, St. Paul Lutheran, 200 W. Orange Street, Lititz
- November 24, Our Saviour Lutheran, 420 N. Progress Avenue, Harrisburg
- December 1, St. Peter Lutheran, 947 N. George, Street, York
"I look forward to gathering with you and other Lower Susquehanna Synod Lutherans on these five Sunday afternoons," added Bishop Dunlop. "There is a hunger in our communities that is both physical and spiritual. We are called together to feed the world-mind, body, and spirit-in the name of Christ. Let the journey and the dialogue continue."

Candlelight Vespers for the Festival of All Saints
Trinity Lutheran Church
2000 Chestnut Street, Camp Hill
4:00 p.m.
Evening Prayer by candlelight will be presented by the Chancel and Matins Choirs. Accompanied by orchestra, selections from Requiem by Giuseppe Verdi will be performed, along with other works appropriate for the Festival of All Saints.
From the beginning of the human race, people kindled lights as darkness approached. The service of light is a dramatic portrayal of creation, when in the darkness God said, "Let there be light" and of the new creation, when from the darkness of death, God called forth His Son. The darkness of chaos, fear and defeat, while strong and ever-threatening, is driven back by the coming of the light. The lighting of the candles is a re-enactment of creation and also of the resurrection. Thus death and resurrection are brought together by the powerful symbols of darkness and light.
