A Service of Celebration of Retirement and Thanksgiving to God for the ministry of   Bishop B. Penrose Hoover   third bishop of the    Lower Susquehanna Synod, ELCA
Sunday         August 25, 2013    6:00 p.m.    Holy Trinity Lutheran Church   31 S. Duke Street   Lancaster, PA 17602   Preacher  The Reverend Michael L. Cooper-White   President, Lutheran Theological Seminary at Gettysburg   A reception will follow the service.   In celebration of the retirement of Bishop B. Penrose Hoover, a fund has been established for the care and concern of rostered leaders to help them and those around them recognize and provide treatment for addictions. CALLING ALL MUSICALLY INCLINED ROSTERED LEADERS!

The liturgy celebrating the retirement of Bishop Hoover on Sunday, August 25 will conclude with a sung benediction by a "pick up" choir of rostered leaders.  If you are planning to attend the service and wish to be part of the choir to honor Bishop Hoover, please contact Pastor Gwenn Trout at 732-9652 or at pastorgwenn@verizon.net to receive a copy of the music.  It would be helpful, also, if you could indicate which part you sing.  A rehearsal will be held that day at 5:30 pm in the choir room, where rostered leaders are invited to vest for the service.  |
 | Ministry Profile: Joanne Wilhelm

What's the question to this Jeopardy answer? "She's been the face and voice of the Bishop's office in our Synod for more than 36 years. This tireless partner in ministry has served alongside four bishops and a host of faithful staff. She exudes calm, graciousness, and warmth even in the toughest of situations and most difficult of times." The correct question is, "Who is Joanne Wilhelm?"   So just who is Joanne Wilhelm? For many of us spread across 14 conferences in some 238 congregations and worshiping communities, Joanne has been a constant presence at 900 South Arlington Avenue. She does her work so efficiently and well that we may never have really had the opportunity to get to know her.   In just a few days, Joanne will begin spending some precious time with her family, enjoying some well-deserved relaxation, and living into that decidedly North American stage of life called "retirement." In the midst of this transition, she was kind enough to share some thoughts and answer a few questions.   As you look back over the 36+ years you've spent as part of our Lower Susquehanna Synod staff team, what has been the biggest blessing for you? One of the biggest blessings has been the opportunity and privilege to serve this church alongside four bishops and so many faithful and gracious synod staff members in such a warm, safe, and caring environment. I have never considered my position here as a job, but as a calling. I was asked three times to join the staff before I realized it was meant to be and, even then, my plan was to stay for about five years. It has indeed been a blessing to want to come to work every day for over 36 years - through joyous times and through difficult times.   Is there any one thought or wish you'd like to leave with the people and congregations of our synod? I would hope that we could all come to realize that we are one in this body. We need to respect one another and know that we are called to work together for the good of all. We most need our grace and compassion when we don't agree. Where would we be without our differences? Our differences keep us challenged. As we face those conflicts, we need to look beyond ourselves to the needs of the whole church and challenge ourselves and one another and hold ourselves and one another accountable.   What one thing do you wish congregations and individual Lutherans knew about our Synod's Office and staff that they probably don't know or realize? I don't think congregations and individuals realize is that our staff is very small in size but very large in commitment to this church and to this synod and its congregations and members. The staff humbly and compassionately serves through its experience, gifts, personal time and personal finances, and its grace. It serves with great joy and it grieves quietly through its conflicts and disappointments and continues on. It serves tirelessly because of its love for this church and its members and our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.   What do you plan/hope to do for the next year of your life and first year of retirement? I first hope to be able to spend more uninterrupted time with my family. My mother is aging and not doing very well. My husband has been patient and supportive (and retired for five years). He is looking forward to more time together to golf and just "hang out". My grandchildren are getting taller than I am (I have seven and one great-granddaughter). I am not a big traveler, so I plan to enjoy my home and some quiet time. However, before the first year ends, I hope to be looking forward to new ways to serve, to challenge myself, and to continue learning.   Joanne's Favorite Passages from Scripture   Romans 12:3-8 "These verses became important to me because in the position that I have held, I often felt intimidated in the area of theology and Bible study. This verse reminds me that my gifts of administration and compassion also are a gift to this church and this synod and others have the gifts I am lacking. It reminds me to receive graciously those gifts I have been given and to use them as God would have me do."   Psalm 23 "I was always extremely close to my grandmother. This was her favorite passage of scripture, so I was familiar with it from a young age. It is a Psalm of comfort and hope. It is a verse of shepherding and caretaking. It is calming. It is simple."   Editor's Note: This is the first of a regular series of ministry profiles featuring individuals who worship, work, and minister in our Lower Susquehanna Synod. Annabelle S. Wenzke, Chair of Global Mission at Advent.   Advent Lutheran Church is one good example of how partnerships in global mission equip local congregations to share the Good News, make a real difference, and form lasting relationships with disciples around the world. Through ELCA Global Mission partnerships, congregations of all sizes experience transformation by helping to build up the global body of Christ.
