God's Work. Our Hands: Synod Youth Package 26,610 Meals to Combat Hunter at Home and Abroad

On Friday, June 28, 96 youth representing 21 congregations from our Lower Susquehanna Synod packed 26,610 meals to feed the hungry in Pennsylvania and abroad. The youth, who were attending All Saints Confirmation Camp at Camp Nawakwa, raised more than $5,000 through various projects in their congregations and generous supplemental funds from Thrivent Financial. The money raised

enabled them to purchase food through Kids Against Hunger , a Minnesota-based humanitarian food-aid program. The entire Nawakwa dining hall became a packing center for three hours on Friday morning. Teams gathered around tables to pack soy protein, vegetables, vegan chicken flavoring, and rice into vacuum-sealed packages that will create a casserole dish to serve six people. They sang, the laughed, they even danced until the supplies ran out.  Local Kids Against Hunger board president Bob Lloyd, board member Mike Gallagher, and Thrivent Community Engagement Representative Rick Baldwin provided training, set-up, and support for the project. their way overseas and the remainder will stay in Pennsylvania, going to Project Share and New Hope. Baldwin noted that this was the first such project in our area that was entirely undertaken by youth. "It's amazing to see the campers and their counselors packing this food," he said, "and having such a good time doing it."

The theme for the camp was "Hunger is No Game." Jennifer Lentfer, founder of How-matters.org, and Senior Writer, Aid Effectiveness at Oxfam America delivered the opening message, telling campers that how they do what they do matters. Youth participated in an Oxfam Hunger Banquet on Wednesday night, and learned about the inequity and injustice of hunger both in the United States and around the world.   Click here to view a short video produced by Pastor Liz Polanzke.
