Ex Libris...
Bishop B. Penrose Hoover

There is no Frigate like a Book
To take us Lands away
Nor any Coursers like a Page
Of prancing Poetry -
This Traverse may the poorest take
Without oppress of Toll -
How frugal is the Chariot
That bears the Human Soul -

These words of Emily Dickinson call to mind the true value and reach of the printed word in the life of the attentive reader. Love good books? Enjoy reading? Value studying and/or perusing the pages of history? If so, Bishop Hoover has an opportunity for you! In preparation for retirement, our bishop is downsizing his library, and is willing to share with a reader or readers who will give certain collections a good home. Included are The Annals of America, a set of Hermeneia biblical commentaries, and The Interpreter's Bible. If you are interested, please contact Bishop Hoover for more information.

Planning a Rally Day Celebration in September?
Consider this.

"God's work. Our hands." Sunday
September 8, 2013

"God's work. Our hands." Sunday is an opportunity to celebrate our 25th anniversary as the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America - one church, freed in Christ to serve and love our neighbor.

We are a church that rolls up our sleeves and gets to work.  On September 8, 2013, let's join together as 4 million members, nearly 10,000 congregations, 65 synods and the churchwide expression for a dedicated day of service.

Let's clean up neighborhoods, deliver meals, collect supplies for refugees overseas, visit our neighbors or help a child learn to read.

You work every day to welcome your neighbors and make your community a better place. Now let's do it together as one body, using our hands to do God's work of restoring and reconciling communities in Jesus Christ's name throughout the world.

Visit the ELCA website and download flyers, bulletin inserts and a  toolkit to help prepare your congregation's dedicated day of service.

Visit the Congregation Connections page on the synod website to keep up with the details of the many good things happening in the worshiping communities of our synod. Please keep us posted about the events and activities taking place in your congregation.
