Rostered Leaders Explore the Treasures of Martin Luther with Tim Wengert
Thirty-two rostered leaders gathered at Camp Nawakwa in late April for a retreat led by the Rev. Dr. Timothy Wengert. In addition to worship, fellowship, and fresh mountain air, they were treated to practical advice for incorporating the very best of Lutheran tradition and heritage into their work in congregations and other ministry settings. Using psalms and hymns, The Small Catechism, and other writings of Martin Luther, Wengert provided stories and fresh approaches to foundational material.
Pastor Eric Anderson commented that the retreat provided an opportunity to relax and renew. "Timothy Wengert's perspectives on Martin Luther, and his enthusiasm for interpreting Luther, were helpful and energizing for my ministry," he said.
Bishop Hoover preached at the opening worship and welcomed rostered leaders from across our synod. The natural surroundings of camp Nawakwa combined with engaging presentations and uplifting worship made this retreat a time of refreshment for body, mind, and spirit.

"It was exciting to see so many rostered leaders here," said Marianne Brock, Associate Executive Director/Nawakwa Director. "We have a history of leadership training here, and it was inspiring to get back to our roots."
In reflecting on the event, assistant to the bishop Pastor Virginia Cover said, "I received a lot of comments about how this type of theological digging into our Lutheran identity helps to really reenergize rostered leaders to return to their settings."
The response to this retreat underscores the need for both continuing education offerings and opportunities for rostered leaders to relax, reflect, and spend time together. Our synod is grateful for Thrivent Financial, Inc. for helping to fund this year's event.

Trindle Spring Lutherans Host Kids Against Hunger
On Saturday, May 4, 2013, Trindle Spring Lutheran Church hosted Kids Against Hunger to assemble food packages of grains and vegetables specially designed to provide high quality nutrition in easily prepared form. More than 65 people assisted in the process. Through fund raising efforts, a generous financial contribution from the West Shore chapter of Thrivent Financial for Lutherans and the blessings of the Holy Spirit, this congregation was able to raise the funds necessary to prepare more than 23,000 individual meals. Twenty percent of the assembled meals remained in the community through a donation to New Hope Ministries, a Mechanicsburg area food bank. The remaining meals were provided to Kids Against Hunger for distribution to impoverished people around the world.
| Pastor Sigrid Hipkiss |
Kids Against Hunger's meals have been formulated by food scientists to provide a rich source of easily digestible protein, carbohydates, and vitamins needed by a malnourished child's body and mind. The meals offer all nine of the essential amino acids required for complete nutrition - something that can't be said about other typical food relief sources such as rice or beans alone. The meals are made from four readily available, dry ingredients that are easy to package, keep for long periods, and require only boiling with water to prepare. Despite the simplicity of the food's content, it is a nutritionally complex, well-balanced and appetizing meal.
God's work. Our hands.
