Church donates items to York fire deparment
Union Lutheran Church donates items to York fire department

"This is a big help to us"

York City Mayor C. Kim Bracey and York City Fire Chief David Michaels met with Pastor Judy McKee from Union Evangelical Lutheran Church on Friday, February 8, at Fire Station 1, East King and South Duke Street, York, to receive multiple donations to the fire department.   The congregation of Union donated a multi-gas detector, 30 safety cones and 60 9-volt batteries worth approximately $1,800.

"The donation is going to help us tremendously, " Chief Michaels said.  "It will benefit everyone in the city."

The fire department has been looking to replace its current gas detector for some time, Michaels said.  The current model, donated by Union Church, "will give us a more accurate meter for gas leaks, carbon monoxide leaks, things of that sort," Michaels said.  "We've been looking to replace our meters.   This is a big help to us."

God's work.  Our hands.

Money Available for Young Adult Ministry!

GirlTeen

Are you currently ministering with and for young adults in your congregation or conference? Do you have a college or university campus nearby that your congregation could easily connect to? Can grant money provide the support your ministry needs to foster a culture of call among young adults in your area?

Then take a moment to apply for a grant through the Project Connect Taskforce of the Lower Susquehanna Synod. Our desire is to provide initial financial support to congregations and institutions where young adult networks are the strongest, and/or where the current leadership has gifts and interested in young adult discernment ministry within the territory of the Lower Susquehanna Synod. Grant monies could be used to host meals for young adults, invite guest speakers to talk about theology, faith, scripture, or even to be able to say "the coffee's on us!" for young adult events.

Applications for grant monies are due by April 1 to Rev. Virginia J. Cover at vcover@lss-elca.org.  The Project Connect Taskforce of our synod will review the applications at their April meeting, and decide which ministries will receive money and how much they will receive. Currently upwards of $4,000 is available for disbursement to eligible ministries!

Questions? Please contact Rev. Virginia Cover at the bishop's office: 717-652-1852x102 or vcover@lss-elca.org.

You May Say I'm a Dreamer...

new blog post

This past weekend we went to Longwood Gardens with some friends and took along our 22-month old daughter and their close-in-age son. Soon after we entered the conservatory and the kids were wandering around, I heard my friend say, "Hurry up!" to her little one. She caught herself, then. What was the point in hurrying up when we were in a giant room full of blooming daffodils and orchids - Spring come early - and outside the frigid wind had just beat us up? And then she thought out loud, "I guess I'm just used to hurrying up all the time. Huh."

Later in the day we went to the children's garden. Near the collection of foundations at child-height, our kids were splashing and laughing and having a great time. There were paintbrushes near by for the kids to use in playing. What struck me was this: my daughter waving the paintbrush around willy-nilly, and our compulsion to keep showing her the "right way" to use it-how to pretend paint with it. We had trouble seeing the paintbrush as something other than its typical purpose. She had the gift of wide-open imagination.  Read more...

Is Your Congregation Engaged in Global Mission?

Take the survey

globalThe Lower Susquehanna Synod Global Mission Committee wants to hear from you! Take the Global Mission Survey and help us map a plan that will best support global mission in synod congregations.

The Global Mission Committee supports global involvement in our country, out of our country, through ELCA-related or independent ministries, in partnership with synod congregations, or in partnership with congregations outside the Lower Susquehanna Synod. Members of the committee will use information gathered from the survey to connect congregations with resources and opportunities that will enhance their global engagement.

How can your congregation participate in the survey? Choose the method that works best for you:

  • Download a copy of the survey of the survey and mail it to us.
  • Complete the online survey (made available to congregations via email in late April).

A summary of the survey results will be available at Synod Assembly, June 6-8, 2013.   Stop by the Global Mission Committee table in the display area and learn more about our synod's global involvement.

Lutheran Home Care Presents 26th Annual Karen A. Rohaly Award

Lutheran Home Care & Hospice recently presented its 2012 Karen A. Rohaly Award to Pat Thompson, Home Health Aide and Office Coordinator in its Westminster, Maryland office.

The award was established after the death of Lutheran Home Care & Hospice's first administrator, Karen A. Rohaly.  Leading the agency for nine years, Ms. Rohaly was a visionary who defined the organization's mission.

Pat has been employed by Lutheran Home Care & Hospice since September 2003.  One nominator noted that Pat is loved by her aide clients whom she cares for with compassion and kindness.  Another said that she keeps the office organized and is always willing to go above and beyond to help the staff in her office and in our other offices as well.  Congratulations, Pat, and thank you for your dedication to our clients!
