Update:  ELCA Response to Hurricane Sandy

hurricaneThrough ELCA Disaster Response, the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA) is responding in areas affected by Hurricane Sandy. In the Caribbean, through our global church partnerships, we are providing basic needs such as food, water and shelter. In Haiti, outbreaks of cholera have been reported. The ELCA has been working with the Lutheran Church of Haiti to build capacity in preserving health and wellness related to cholera. Throughout the United States we are working hand-in-hand with synods and ministry organizations who are experts at outreach in their communities.

We are working with church bodies in Cuba and Haiti and are in close contact with synods, congregations and disaster response partners within the United States to meet the immediate needs of those affected by this storm. And we will continue to help for as long as we are needed.

Click here to learn more about the situation and the ELCA response.  You will find:

  • an updated bulletin insert
  • information on how to make a donation in support of disaster response ministry
  • worship resources such as prayers, litanies and hymn suggestions
  • a Hurricane Sandy Situation Report

Konde

Connections Cafe Is Hub of Hospitality

The Konde Committee had an opportunity to experience the new space within the synod office suite this week.  The renovated Welcome/Resource Center space features comfy furniture, WiFi, media projection capability, and Fair Trade coffee and tea.  Made possible by volunteer labor, this "old space made new" reduces the synod office "footprint" at the United Church Center.

CJSThe Criminal Justice System Ministry

of Lower Susquehanna Synod will meet Thursday, November 15, at noon.  Bring a sandwich and participate in this time of conversation at the United Church Center. We encourage you to consider making a Basket of Love as an alternative Christmas gift - a basket of needed items for returning citizens coming out of prison who have limited financial resources and supplies.  The need is great.  Contact Pastor Sadie Pounder at associatepastor@trinitylancaster.org or Pastor Virginia Cover at vcover@lss-elca.org for more information and "how to" brochures.

Confirmation Camp Opportunity

  • Confirmation CampDoes your congregation struggle with catechesis for only a few students?
  • Are you and your students tired of the "same old, same old?"
  • Do you want to connect with other Lutheran congregations to create an amazing Confirmation experience?

Call (717.732.9652) or e-mail Pastor Gwenn Trout (pastorgwenn@verizon.net), convenor of the All Saints Confirmation Camp program.  All Saints Confirmation Camp is a two/three year Confirmation program held at Camp Nawakwa in June and open to all ELCA congregations.  This program features all the benefits of being at camp (pool, arts and crafts, camp fires, quality staff, Christian community) with the added benefit of team teaching with multiple congregations across the territory of this synod.  An "infomercial" DVD will be available January 2013.

LutheranHANDS Winter Trip 2012

LutheranHANDSWhere:  New Orleans, Louisiana

When:  December 26, 2012 - January 2, 2013

Cost:  $365 per person

What:

Help Christina and Connie Labat renovate and prepare a warehouse which they have purchased for transformation into a Music/Theater/Arts School.  As in our area school districts, the city of New Orleans has made budget cuts and reduced the number of arts programs.  This is a sad situation, as arts are a significant part of the New Orleans culture.  Our service will include cleaning, painting walls and patching areas of the roof.  And, perhaps most importantly, we will build personal connections and friendships with people in New Orleans.

Registration deadline is December 1, 2012.

Interested?  Contact LutheranHANDS at information@lutheranhands.org.

Go to Germany with Lost and Found

Luther500Join Lutheran Christian musicians Lost and Found as they host a pilgrimage to Germany!   The Luther 500 Festival is an eight-day cultural immersion experience that brings the Reformation to life as you serve, learn, and celebrate in the places where Martin Luther did the same 500 years ago. This pilgrimage to Germany will revitalize your school or congregation as participants come face to face with the breadth and importance of the Reformation, make new friends, connect with their heritage, and experience first hand how Church history can be a whole lot of fun. Prepare to be transformed and re-formed.  Read more...
