Behind the Times?
At a recent listening post, participants were discussing Central Question #1 - words or phrases that describe our congregations/the synod now. One person put it bluntly in three simple words: "behind the times."
Are we behind the times as church today? I wonder about this. In a recent Fresh Start gathering we used a history-sharing exercise to talk about where our church's formative years were. Many reflected that their congregation's time was the 1950s, when Sunday School Movements were strong and the church double-functioned as a social club; when attendance was high (the hey-day?), and the children's choir was so large it barely fit in the chancel. Adiophora?
A big word, but a powerful one. The Lutheran's November issue will help you look at the "power of Lutheran words." Author Rolf Jacobson says: "The words that Lutheran theology generates work like a good pair of shoes: they fit comfortably and wear well. Normal people can tie them on, walk around and pound the pavement of daily life in them." To help your discussion, you'll find a study guide for this article in the print issue and online (www.thelutheran.org - click on "study guides" on the left side; it's free for print and Web subscribers).
