New NACCHO Resource: Documentation Considerations for Accreditation: Tobacco Prevention and Control 

NACCHO releases new fact sheet highlighting several of the 12 accreditation domains that may be relevant to local tobacco programs. This document also includes ideas for potential documentation that relate to tobacco and links to examples that LHDs have submitted from NACCHO's Documentation Library. Recruitment Deadline Extended for the Tips from Former Smokers Campaign 
CDC's Office on Smoking and Health has extended recruitment for the next Tips from Former Smokers campaign until October 21, 2013. The 2014 campaign will feature real people who suffered severe health conditions caused directly by smoking or who have lost a family member from a smoking-related condition. Request for Comments: Menthol in Cigarettes, Tobacco Products 
The FDA has issued an Advanced Notice of Proposed Rulemaking (ANPRM) seeking additional information on menthol in cigarettes. The FDA also released its preliminary scientific evaluation of public health issues related to the use of menthol in cigarettes. Until September 23, 2013, the FDA will accept public comments on menthol, including scientific data, local survey data, and evidence of the public health impact of menthol.

Counter Tools Offers Point of Sale Training 

Counter Tools announces the second Getting Started at Point of Sale Training Institute, to be held October 24-25, 2013 in Chapel Hill, NC. This two-day, interactive training is designed for tobacco control and public health workers from state and local health departments and voluntary organizations who want to learn more, get started, or ramp up their point of sale efforts. Participation in this training also provides three months of Store Audit Center software access and weekly technical assistance calls. Click here to learn more.  

Story from the Field: Vanderburgh County, Indiana, Rallies for Smoke-free Air 

Smokefree Communities of Vanderburgh County, consisting of 70 businesses and organizations, collaborated on two smoke-free workplace ordinance campaigns, resulting in comprehensive smoke-free air ordinances and a 95% decrease in air pollution for workplaces, restaurants, and bars. Read more here
