Resources on Tobacco Taxation
Tobacco tax increases have been proven to decrease tobacco use initiation among youths and increase tobacco cessation among adults, while generating new revenue for state tobacco control programs. Anticipating continued budget cuts to tobacco control programs in 2013, the Campaign for Tobacco Free Kids (CTFK) created several important tools to support tobacco tax increases at the state and local level, including a list of resources on tobacco taxes and a checklist for tobacco tax increases. The CTFK website also hosts a list of fact sheets on U.S. state and local taxes.

"State of Tobacco Control" Report The American Lung Association released the eleventh issue of its annual report, "State of Tobacco Control," which tracks progress on key tobacco control policies at the state and federal level. The report assigns grades to all 50 state governments and the District of Columbia based on the level of adequacy of each state's tobacco control policies. This year's report highlighted the problem of states failing to invest in prevention and reduction of tobacco use, while the tobacco industry spends millions on tobacco promotion and advertisement. The report also faults the federal government for failing to aggressively pursue the tobacco industry. Read the full report here.
