Public Comment Opportunity: Behavioral Counseling to Promote a Healthy Diet and Physical Activity for Cardiovascular Disease Prevention in Persons With Known Risk Factors The U.S. Preventive Services Task Force posted for public comment its draft Research Plan on behavioral counseling to promote a healthy diet and physical activity for cardiovascular disease prevention in persons with known risk factors. The draft Research Plan is available for review and public comment from January 29 through February 25, 2013. Click here to review the draft Research Plan and submit comments. 

 

Special Announcement HIPAA Final Rule 

On January 17, 2013, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) released the final omnibus rule enhancing the privacy and security protections provided for health information under the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA). Wear Red to Celebrate American Heart Month in February

The National Association of County and City Health Officials joins our partners in the Million Hearts™ initiative  to prevent 1 million heart attacks and strokes in the United States by 2016. When all health sectors work together to emphasize the importance of cardiovascular health, such as reducing sodium intake and controlling blood pressure and cholesterol, people can lead healthier, more productive lives. Healthy food options and physical activity, and following health care professional's instructions about medications are other important lifestyle choices.

Helping Children Reduce Dietary Sodium Medscape Video Now Available

CDC recently developed a two and a half minute video entitled, "Helping Children Reduce Dietary Sodium", now available on Medscape. The video highlights sodium intake in adults and children and findings from a recent CDC study indicating children are consuming as much sodium as adults. The video may be found here

Practice Facilitators and Case Managers Can Help Enhance the Primary Care Team 

Efforts to redesign primary care require multiple supports. Two potential members of the primary care team-practice facilitator and care manager play distinct roles in redesigning and improving care delivery. These important, complementary roles aim to help primary care practices deliver coordinated, accessible, comprehensive, and patient-centered care, and are further examined and explained in this paper: Enhancing the Primary Care Team to Provide Redesigned Care: The Roles of Practice Facilitators and Care Managers featured in the January/February online issue of Annals of Family Medicine.


Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program: Examining the Evidence to Define Benefit Adequacy

The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) is the largest nutrition assistance program administered by the USDA, serving more than 46 million low-income Americans per year, at a cost of more than $75 billion. The USDA asked the IOM and the National Research Council to consider whether it is feasible to objectively define the adequacy of SNAP allotments that meet the program goals and, if so, to outline the data and analyses needed to support and evidence-based assessment of SNAP adequacy.Click here to access the report

 

New Resource: Collaborative for Healthy Weight

Collaborate for Healthy Weight is a project of the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) and the National Initiative for Children's Healthcare Quality (NICHQ) funded by the Affordable Care Act Prevention and Public Health Fund.  The Collaborative for Healthy Weight has numerous resources and tools for communities to adapt and implement.  Click here for more information

Sodium Reduction Tools 
The Public Health Law Program (PHLP) provides resources on state governments' laws and policies related to dietary sodium and sodium intake in various populations. According to the National Center for Chronic Disease Prevention and Health Promotion's Division for Heart Disease and Stroke Prevention (DHDSP), excess dietary sodium raises the risk for high blood pressure and its cardiovascular health consequences, including heart disease and stroke, the 1st and 4th leading causes of death in the US.  Click here to access tools.
