The Secret to a Successful Move

Many companies are beginning to see the value of including the spouse more cohesively in the assimilation process because quite often the secret to a successful move is a happy spouse.

The term often used to describe the relocating employee's spouse is "trailing spouse." While this phrase is mostly used for ex-pats, the concept is loosely linked to spouses embarking on domestic moves as well. The picture it paints is anything but positive---like a child reluctantly dragging its toy behind him.

A spouse carrying the title of "trailing spouse" is likely not going to feel very good about it. They need to feel honored, valued and appreciated. They are leaving behind so much familiarity and comfort, only to face uncertainty and vulnerability. It's no wonder the spouse often feels anxiety, grief and depression about the move.

How about replacing the term "trailing spouse" with a new and improved version: The Supporting Spouse?

Good self-care for the supporting spouse is the secret to enhancing the health of the entire family. Would a family choose to move to a new city and buy a home that was completely run down, with a leaky roof and rotting foundation? Metaphorically speaking, that is what many families are being asked to do when the needs of the supporting spouse are overlooked. If the physical and emotional body is dilapidated, the condition of the new home simply won't matter.

WE'RE MOVING WHERE??? Five Steps to Relocation Ease, is a new book that speaks directly to the spouse or life partner of the relocating employee. Its goal is to help the supporting spouse feel every bit as important in the moving process as the transferee.
