While temp housing seems easy from the outside, it comes with its own unique challenges. Did you know the housing facility will require a background check on your employee? Did you know that there is a temp housing shortage pushing prices up and choices down? Read more about this unique industry and remind your employees - it's only temporary!

Temporary Housing

Things Your Employee Needs to Know

Top Ten

10. Lease Breaking - If your employee does not like the building, apartment or commute, they need to be reminded throughout the process that their lease is legally binding and that it's not like a hotel where they can check in and out.

9. Apartment No Longer Available - During peak periods, apartments being presented often only last for hours, not days. Your employee needs to make a decision quickly when the options are presented, and when multiple options are presented, it's a good idea for them to have a second choice.

8. Commute - Your employee wants to walk to work, commute 15 minutes, or ride one bus. This is a common request. If someone wants to walk to work, find out how far they think is reasonable. Some people think four blocks is too far!

7. Notice to Vacate - This is probably the most misunderstood process in temporary housing. The Notice to Vacate is 30 days. If the employee is only staying 30 days they will be asked to give notice before they ever move in.

6. Arrival Experience - If your employee has never lived in a temporary furnished apartment before, it is important to set realistic expectations. Especially, if they think they will have someone meet them to carry luggage and have a margarita machine in the apartment!

5. Internet / Cable TV -  The most common problem at arrival is "I can't access the internet" or "I can't get the cable to work". This is almost always caused by user error. Reading arrival instructions thoroughly will solve 99% of these problems.

4. Apartment Size - Three plus bedroom apartments are in short supply or non-existent in many parts of the country, especially in urban areas. Employees who need to bring their family need to be prepared for this in the beginning of their move.

3. Budget - Temporary housing costs are on the rise in many locations around the US. Before committing to a budget talk to us for a market update.

2. Areas - Check with your employees before they move into a downtown location. Asking a simple question such as, "have you ever lived in a large city before?" may save lots of headaches when they are alarmed about the noise or homeless population.

And the Number One Thing Your Employee Needs to Know About Temporary Living...

1. Pets -More people in the US own pets than ever before. Not only do more of us own pets, we own more of them! Weight, breed and number make a difference in what apartments are available. Make sure your employee's know in advance what's allowed and that they understand the fees.
