Parent Heart Watch is the national voice solely dedicated to protecting youth from Sudden Cardiac Arrest and  preventable Sudden Cardiac Death.   

Parent Heart Watch leads and empowers others by sharing information, educating and advocating for change.

PHW Presents at ECCU 2012
Executive Director, Michele Snyder and Board Chair, Martha Lopez-Anderson presented on the "Implementing Community Programs for Schools and Youth-Serving Organizations" during the Emergency Cardiovascular Care Update conference in Orlando. 
  
Karen Fray & Martha Martha also presented at the closing plenary session with Karen Fray, the mother of  recent SCA survivor Xhosa Fray-Chinn.  Xhosa was saved by an AED placed by Andy and Martha Anderson.

Petition to Help Make AEDs More Accesible
The Sudden Cardiac Arrest Coalition (SCAC) has initiated a petition seeking the support and action of the US Secretary of Education and the US Department of Health and Human Services, in making AEDs accesible in all schools and places of public gathering. 

 

  
SCAC is comprised of 46 nonprofit organizations that have joined together to increase survival from sudden cardiac arrest (SCA) through initiatives to expand public awareness, research funding and access to life-saving therapies.ated Topics

SCA Awareness Month

  

October is National Sudden Cardiac Arrest Awareness Month and the perfect time to raise awareness of SCA in youth.  PHW offers several ways to get the word out.

The third annual Heroes for Young Hearts awards will be presented at the Friday evening Welcome  Dinner on January 18, 2013 during the PHW National Conference in Seattle.

Nominations are due by October 31 in the following categories.  Nominees are not required to be PHW members: 
 

Advocacy Champion Adult 

 (must be 21 years of age or older)

 

Advocacy Champion Youth 

 (must be 20 years of age or younger)

 

Young Survivor Champion
(must be an SCA survivor 25 years of age or younger)

Make-A-Wish Central New York Winner of
AED Contest Giveaway

PHW partnered with Cardiac Science to giveaway an automated external defibrillator (AED) for National CPR/AED Awareness week.

 

The essay submitted by Make-A-Wish of Central New York,

CEO, Diane Kupperman and 14 year-old and Wish-Kid, Rebecca Lloyd, received the most votes.  

 

"Becca and I believe an AED in the Make-A-Wish building is essential to ensuring the safety of wish children, families, volunteers and the community using our space throughout the year," said Kupperman.

Congratulations!  

 

Renee & Andee Renee Langstaff of New Jersey and her cousin, Andee West, swam from Prescott, Ontario, Canada to their hometown of Ogdensburg, NY, to raise awareness of sudden cardiac arrest in youth! Proceeds benefitted PHW. 

 

 

Jim and Karen Zilinski celebrated the signing of Janet's Law by N.J. Governor Chris Christie in September.  The law requires AEDs in all New Jersey schools, the establishment of emergency action plans for responding to sudden cardiac events, and training for school officials and coaches on how to operate an AED.

Erin Anderegg
has been working with METRA trains in Chicago who recently announced that they are putting AEDs on all of their trains...Norm Okerstrom has been instrumental in advocating with the City of Plymouth, MN who recently announced that they are becoming a Heart Safe Community!

Laurieann Milligan of Maine was named a Heartsmart.com  Hero for her work donating AEDs in Nicaragua. 

 

Shannon Ozene and Nancy Barcia joined forces to place AEDs at local parks and recreation centers in Louisiana.  A press conference was held to announce the placement of the AEDs on August 1...Khristin Carroll has confirmed that the New Hampshire HB911 AED Commision is distributing 6-16 AEDs in schools that are not already equipped with them.

 

Melinda Murray and the Dominic A. Murray 21 Memorial Foundation were represented at the National Night Out Against Crime on August 7 in New York.  Melinda and friends taught Hands Only CPR to attendees...Jim Seymour collected donations in memory of his son, Adam, which were used to donate two ECG machines to Lynchburg College. The College hopes to use the machines in screenings this fall.
