Working at the Women's Legal Centre in South Africa, with an all female legal team.
Khayelitsha
"There is an incident which is particular vivid to me. Khayelitsha is a township in Cape Town.
"The centre was investigating police malpractice. The Minister of Police filed an application in the High Court for an interdict to suspend the inquiry. The Women's Legal Team worked with others.
"Standing outside the High Court with 300 people - protesting, chanting, singing, demanding that their voices be heard, a phenomenal experience.
"The crowd were very respectful. They wanted their presence to be felt. They hoped to increase pressure through the press. It was ruled Constitutional through the Court, and went ahead.

Global Journalism
"The one thing I have learnt if there is anything to make money off, they will do it. They will sell anything; they will sell babies, they will steal your organs.
"This is why journalists really need to globalize. Crime globalized a long time ago, and I think organizations like the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists do really fantastic cross border work. They strike up collaborations with investigative journalists, in different countries.
"Crime does this very well, why shouldn't we?"

"When is an engineer not an engineer?
"When she's coding. Not climbing a heavy ladder and lifting heavy tools in a hard hat. Women coding are at a desk, not even wearing purple boots."

Welcome All
Apparently England has had the coolest summer for some time! However, summer has been spread over several weeks with heat waves and wintery spells in between. It begins to feel like Melbourne.
It's Autumn. You will notice a change of colour, which is a precursor of some changes to come. Change - good, exciting, scary or all three.
Above all I wish to thank all those colleagues, friends and new acquaintances who did not laugh at the idea but offered comments and, greatest of all, gave a name, a contact and organisation.
It is that simeple. Think of a name, and make a connection.
This is to be connecting on a grand scale. Watch for the next newssheet.

Women seem to be very much in the news suddenly.
We are about to take another 3 steps forward, but be on the lookout for the 5 steps back. Anyone who thinks women's equality has been achieved should read A Woman's Place (1910-1975) by Ruth Adam, which charts the gains and losses since the beginning of the century.

Three Amazing Women
Also in the news Gail Kelly, the former CEO of Westpac. Having achieved an increase in the
numbers of women employees through the bank at all levels (43%), Gail Kelly has resigned and is moving on to a more global role. Recently seen in Vanuatu helping to launch access to water, lost during the most recent (unfortunately named) cyclone. She used the opportunity to raise women's inequality, particularly for women in poverty. The article about Gail Kelly's advice is here: Lessons for Life, WATC.
A point of language here, as it will be a feature in the revised OnlyConnecting.
How to describe Julia Gillard - either the former Prime Minster of Australia, past tense, or the first woman Prime Minister of Australia, present continuous, and historically will be always. Language is very powerful. Migrants, or more accurately, Refugees?
If you are interested in more CityEye articles, you will find them here: Thanks to Vanessa Vallely and the team for their support and assistance in the publication of these articles. Fabulous magazine for city workers!

STEMettes
There is currently a push to interest more students in Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (Spell it out STEM), especially girls.
Dame Athene Donald whom we hope to interview shortly. Both Dame Athene and Julia Gillard write regularly for The Guardian.

ionthecity
After the wonderful Juliana Ruhfus of Al Jazeera, up in the Shard. The most recent interview for ionthecity, was in Constitution House overlooking the Houses of Parliament and the Clock Tower.
We do go to interesting places.
Lady Margaret Hodge, Dame and now Professor, the recent chair of the Public Accounts Committee, politicians and companies alike having to account for allowances, tax and accountability. She became renowned for plain speaking, and it's possible a verb has entered the English language, to have been 'Hodged'.
It was a delight to spend time with her, her views and outlook on life. Making the most of it. Her rich hinterland.

Ascent of Women
Just this week, Dr Amanda Foremen has a new BBC series called the Ascent of Women. Just started and presumably shortly showing in Australia as well, shortly.
