Event News You Can Use
May 2013

headshot This time of year always amazes me.  The days just zip by, each day faster than the last.  Ironically, I've been helping two clients celebrate life this month ... one, a memorial celebration for her late husband; the other, a fabulous 50th birthday for a dear friend.  Celebrating another person's life reminds me to slow down and enjoy my own.

Keeping with the 'Celebrating Life' theme, this month's newsletter features inspiring ideas for a Memorial Celebration, as well as a refreshing Watermelon Cooler recipe for your Memorial Day festivities.

As always, I wish you many reasons to celebrate ... and when you need professional event assistance, please contact me!

Celebration of Life

celebration of life

Last year, my neighbor's father passed away.  Overwhelmed by too many decisions and much sadness, she asked if I would help her plan a Memorial Celebration. Below are a few strategies that we came up with to honor and celebrate his life; these ideas may inspire your celebration when the time comes.

Celebrate heritage!

My neighbor's father was Italian. His heritage was an integral part of their family, especially when it came to holiday gatherings and celebrations. The menu included an assortment of delicious Italian hors d'oeuvres, including grandma's family recipe meatballs and a large tray of cannolis.

Everybody Loves Somebody
!
He enjoyed listening to classic songs from Dean Martin and Frank Sinatra. Playing his old CDs was a gentle reminder and a nice welcome to guests as they entered the room.

Remember when?

Between three siblings and a lot of extended relatives, there were many photos to display of her father with family and friends at various phases of his life. Groups of photos were scattered around the room allowing guests to reminisce about the good times!

Inspired by Blue Eyes

Selecting décor for a man is typically challenging but we found a way to make it special. She requested bluish-purple floral centerpieces ... just like the color of her father's eyes!

A toast!
While speeches were not requested, prosecco (Italian sparkling wine) was offered at the bar if guests wanted to raise their glass to toast a fine man and celebrate his life

{posh POV blog}  Why Don't People RSVP?

If I had a nickel for every time someone asked me 'why don't people RSVP', I would be a rich gal!  Seriously, I get asked this question all the time by family, friends, colleagues and clients.  It dumbfounds people that someone wouldn't respond to an invitation (to their fantastic, expensive, time-consuming, labor-intensive event!).   And actually, [click here to read more]
Watermelon Cooler

watermelon cooler - prettypinktulip via pinterest Recently, I wrote "Refreshing Cocktails for Your Spring Celebrations" on The DC Ladies.  I included this refreshing recipe for Memorial Day Weekend.  It's like summer in a glass!

3 pounds watermelon (flesh cut into pieces; save some thin slices for garnish)

1/2 cup vodka

1/4 cup Triple Sec

3 tablespoons fresh lime juice

Purée watermelon pieces in a blender and strain through a very fine sieve set over a pitcher; discard the solids. (There should be about 2-1/3 cups juice). Stir in the vodka, Triple Sec, and lime juice.  Pour into glass over ice and garnish with thin slice of watermelon. Photo via Pinterest

golf tee boutonnieres These adorable golf tee boutonnieres were created for the Memorial Celebration last week.  Many of the guests were golfing buddies with my clients' late husband and it was fitting to recognize them.  Needless to say, they were a hit!  They would also be great for a wedding, or maybe prom.  For more inspiring ideas, visit my Pinterest boards.
