Director's Message
Dear ,

There is a lot happening in regional economic development. We are happy to announce that our consortium to create a regional designation to support Ag manufacturing was successful; we were among 12 new regions designated across the country. An article below highlights the collaboration in some detail.

We invite you to mark your calendar for next year's Economic Forecast Conference, scheduled for January 14, 2016 at the Gold Country Event Center in Oroville, CA.

This month's map highlights skin cancer rates  around the state. (FYI - our maps receive the greatest attention among readers.)

We also highlight two studies; one from the McKinsey Institute on workforce, and the second, a regional initiative to study recreation along the Sacramento River.

The Central Valley AgPlus Food and Beverage Manufacturing ConsortiumAgPlus
California is the largest agricultural economy in the U.S. and among the top ten globally. The Central Valley - 28 counties located in California's heartland - plays a dominant role in this economy as America's Farm to Fork Capital.

The Consortium's Goal is to advance the region's agriculture-related manufacturing economy, transforming raw goods into value-added products.

Its mission is to catalyze the growth and creation of food and beverage manufacturing businesses and middle-skills jobs in the Central Valley, one of the most economically distressed regions in the country. Innovative technologies that improve use of water and energy, reduce waste and improve food safety are being incubated in the Valley. They will drive increased productivity and contribute to solving global resource challenges, including California's severe drought.
Consortium members are currently investing nearly $150 million in the AgPlus ecosystem, with implementation commitments of $5,987,900.

What is the IMCP Designation?
The Investing in Manufacturing Communities Partnership (IMCP) Designation will be granted by the U.S. Economic Development Administration to 12 regions across the country to help accelerate the resurgence of manufacturing. Designated communities will receive the coordinated support of fourteen federal agencies and preferential consideration for $1.3 billion in existing federal funding opportunities.

Age-Adjusted Skin Cancer Rates

According to the American Academy of Dermatology, an estimated one out of every five Americans will develop skin cancer in their lives, and exposure to both natural and artificial ultraviolet (UV) light is a risk factor for all kinds of skin cancer.

Nationwide there are about two million diagnosed cases of non-melanoma skin cancer. Skin cancer is highly curable and there is a 98 percent five-year survival rate of people whose melanoma is detected and treated before spreading to the lymph nodes.

CSUC Economists Continue Analysis of Recreation on the Sacramento RiverSacRiver
As part of a multi-year project to analyze the economic change associated with public land ownership and habitat conservation along the Sacramento River, researchers at California State University, Chico are continuing to survey users of public access sites along the river corridor between Redding and Knights Landing.

The survey effort, which was featured in the CED's March newsletter, will come to a close in September of this year. Summer interns working for the CSUC Economics Department will be focusing on popular boat launches and public access facilities for the remainder of the survey period, as the salmon season comes into full swing later this month.
