The Center for Economic Development is proud to announce that our Research Unit was instrumental in aiding 17 health centers in California receive new funding totaling $12,177,261 for FY 2014! The investments are awarded by the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services via the Affordable Care Act. The purpose of the funding is to improve access to comprehensive quality primary health care in communities of need. These communities are burdened with high poverty rates, homelessness, uninsured populations and low income households.
This national grant competition is highly competitive. The CED assisted in this effort by providing mapping and quality, local level data that helped our clients highlight the need in their communities. It was the ability of the CED to produce data at the local level that gave our clients' the edge they needed to submit their best application possible.
Our success rate for this round of funding was 81 percent. Out of all awardees in California, 36.2 percent were our clients. Out of all awardees nationwide, the CED helped 6.3 percent receive awards.

Veteran Population as a Percent of Total Population of California
Click on the map below to see full-size
Veteran population as a percentage of total population in California shows an interesting split between Northern and Southern California. Nearly all of the counties from the Sacramento MSA north to the Oregon boarder have greater than 8.5 percent of the veteran population having veteran status. Only Yolo and Colusa counties have a smaller percentage. South of Mariposa County, only three counties have 10.5 percent or greater of their population with veteran status (Inyo, Kings, and San Diego) while only two more have veteran status of 8.5 percent or greater (San Luis Obispo and Riverside). All ten of the California counties with veteran status above 13.5 percent (Del Norte, Siskiyou, Modoc, Trinity, Plumas, Sierra, Lake, Amador, Calaveras, and Mariposa) are all in the northern half of the state and all have comparatively low population densities. Sierra County, with a total population of 2,723 has the highest percentage of veterans in the state at over 20 percent while Amador comes in second at just over 16 percent.

Highlights from the October 15th Roundtable with Commissioner Sandoval
Many thanks to all who attended the October 15th Broadband Roundtable with Catherine Sandoval and Communications Director Ryan Dulin. 49 people representing 12 northern counties voiced a collective need and demand for access to better broadband in Northern California. The overarching theme that arose from this meeting is that Northern CA lacks broadband infrastructure, and, without infrastructure there can be no adoption. Therefore, in order to facilitate effective identification of exactly where broadband is not available and is needed, please:
1) Complete the Validation of Broadband Availability survey. 2) Facilitate the completion of a survey on behalf of those California neighbors who remain underserved, unserved, "in-between" and with special needs, especially those who don't have access to adequate broadband, or at all. 3) Distribute as widely as you possibly can---electronic version on websites, newsletters, etc., hard copies in public meeting places (libraries, chambers of commerce, community and senior centers, schools, etc.). As the surveys are returned to the CPUC, each address will be geo-coded and added as a data point to a new public feedback layer of the CA Interactive Broadband Map. Read MoreThis information will help determine what geographic areas qualify for broadband deployment funds based on demand (v. supply) and the lack of broadband, rather than advertised claims of broadband availability.
