Breast Cancer Death Rates per 100,000 Women
Click on the map below to see full-size
Rural northern counties are more likely to have higher death rates due to breast cancer than the state's larger urban counties. Rates in the northern San Joaquin Valley and southern Sierra Nevada tend to have the lowest rates. Breast cancer is usually curable when detected early, so lower death rates likely are linked with rates of early detection. We encourage women over 40 to have a mammogram annually to ensure early detection. Women in families with a history of breast cancer should be tested beginning at age 30. In addition, the (Centers for Disease Control) CDC has an excellent Website comparing breast cancer deaths by state. In the following maps on the CDC Website, the U.S. states are divided into groups based on the rates at which women developed or died from breast cancer in 2009, which is the most recent year with numbers available. The rates are the numbers out of 100,000 women who developed or died from breast cancer each year. READ MORE

Broadband News: CA Requests Public Feedback to Improve Broadband Availability Maps. Since 2009, the National Telecommunications & Information Administration (NTIA) has been collecting broadband services availability directly from the providers, showing maximum, or "up to" advertised speeds. The CPUC's Communications Division, however, just released a Validation of Broadband Availability survey, and along with the other twelve (12) regional broadband consortia leads around the state, I have been asked to forward/distribute this survey to as many CA residents as possible: Click HereIn order to create a more accurate picture of broadband services actually being delivered to CA's census blocks, your feedback is necessary to build a comprehensive public feedback layer. This layer may then be used to identify, at a more granular level, what areas remain underserved and unserved areas, a critical step in determining which areas qualify for broadband infrastructure grants. Just this week, on 10/15/13, CA Public Utility Commissioner Catherine Sandoval and the Communications Division's (new) Director Ryan Dulin joined over fifty (50) attendees from around the northstate for a Broadband Roundtable, held at the Shasta Builders Exchange. The primary theme which arose from the discussion was that northern California lacks adequate broadband infrastructure. Student Researcher Spotlight --- Michael Karp
| |
Michael is a student researcher currently working on the 2014 Regional Economic Scorecard to be showcased at the Economic Forecast Conference in January. The scorecard is an analysis of nine Metropolitan Statistical Areas, five in California and four in Oregon, Idaho, and Nevada. These nine areas are compared, both to one another and to the national average, using a number of economic indices that rate the quality and competitiveness of the area. The indices included ranges from such indicators as economic performance, entrepreneurship, and innovation. The Economic Scorecard is useful for businesses and local governments to not only gain valuable information about their own region, but to gain insight into other regions within their competitive circle and use that information to aid in future entrepreneurial and policy decisions.
