Director's Message
We have a State Budget.  However, the economic development program landscape is yet to be set.  New programs have yet to be defined to replace those vital programs lost over the past year due to budget cuts.  We will have more information in next month's newsletter highlighting the programs which have been created to build a strong California economy.

In this month's newsletter, we have a new map, highlighting the potential impact of the implementation of the Affordable Care Act.  We hope you find these monthly maps informative.  Please e-mail us to let us know if you find them helpful, or if you have ideas for next month's map.

This month, Michael Suplita wrote a report titled "What is a medical or nursing degree actually worth?" We think you will find this article interesting.

Save the date for January 16, 2014 for the 14th Annual Northstate Economic Forecast Conference. The theme for 2014 is "Healthy Time to Grow."

Our map of the month for July reflects ongoing research conducted by CED to evaluate the impact of implementation of the Affordable Care Act.  Specifically, this map shows the percent of population who will be newly-eligible for Medi-Cal under the Affordable Care Act.  The population who are newly eligible are people living in households below 138 percent of the federal poverty line, who are currently uninsured, and who are not undocumented foreigners.  Data are available for counties and places with more than 20,000 people and for other sub-county geographical breakdowns.  We present the data in the most specific geographical boundaries available.

Medi-Cal under the Affordable Care Act

With increasing wages for healthcare professionals, the question was raised amongst my friends: "What is the actual value of going to medical school and becoming a doctor versus becoming a Registered Nurse (RN)?" After some debate, I decided to calculate the true value of a medical degree, and the true value of a nursing degree, to a 2013 high school graduate. After completing both analyses it can be concluded that, if higher earnings is the goal, students without mitigating circumstances should choose medical school over nursing school.  It was discovered that the Net Present Value (NPV) of a nursing degree to someone just starting their education is approximately $1.46 million (the total discounted value of all future earnings) compared to the $1.82 million value associated with a medical degree. The $361,614 increase in value if one becomes a doctor instead of a nurse equates to a 20% difference.
