In addition, Warren Jensen put together an interesting map on California Sales and Use Tax Rates as of April 1st, 2013. Be sure to view the the full-size version of the map by clicking on the preview. Furthermore, there is a funding opportunity from the Economic Development Administration for the "Make it in America Challenge" to encourage foreign and domestic businesses to build and/or expand their operations in the United States.

California sales and use tax is the purchases of goods by the final consumer, excluding food staples purchased for consumption off premises. This map shows the geography of sales and use tax rates in California. The statewide sales and use tax rate is currently 7.5 percent of the purchase price. However, the rate is higher in cities and counties where voters have approved additional taxes to fund local improvements such as transportation and libraries, or may be used to support general services. Some jurisdictions charge as much as 2.5 additional percentages points on top of the state's sales tax for a total sales tax of 10 percent. See the California Board of Equalization at www.boe.ca.gov for more information. Generally, sales tax is higher in urban areas, especially around the San Francisco Bay Area and Los Angeles County, but this is not universal. Urban San Diego County and rural Inyo County both charge a sales tax of 8.0 percent. Rural northern California is where you are most likely to pay the least sales tax, as Nevada City in Nevada County is the northernmost area where you will find sales taxes that are at least 8.5 percent. Also, generally, sales tax rates are not correlated with economic performance, at least during the recovery of the great recession. While the parts of the state that have recovered the fastest, which include the Central Coast and the Tulare Basin just inland, have some of the lowest rates in the state, much of low-tax far northern California is the part of the state that is recovering the slowest.

The Top-7 Things You Need to Know About California Property Taxes
|
Many of you have mortgage companies that pay your property tax out of an escrow account so we often do not think about when our property taxes are due or the assessed value of our homes or investment properties. As April, is not just income tax month it is also the property tax month (YAY!) for those of us who choose to hold on to our cash until the last minute and pay in two equal payments for the year I think it is fitting to highlight some of the intricacies of the California property tax system:

California's Broadband Mapping and Data development program has been underway for almost 2.5 years now, and the CA Interactive Broadband Map introduced a host of new features July 2012. However, there has been little response to one feature in particular, and I, as the Co-Manager of both the Northeastern and Upstate CA Connect Consortia, ask you to share whether or not you have adequate broadband service to your residence. Federal Funding Opportunity for
Make it in America Challenge Published
Initiative Encourages Businesses to Bring Production Back to the United States or Expand Domestic Operations
|
Today, the Obama administration made funding available for the Make it in America Challenge to encourage foreign and domestic businesses to build and/or expand their operations in the United States. Up to 15 awards will be made to accelerate job creation by encouraging re-shoring of productive activity by U.S. firms, fostering increased foreign direct investment, encouraging U.S. companies to keep or expand their businesses-and jobs-here at home, and training local workers to meet the needs of those businesses. Funding partners for this coordinated assistance include the U.S. Department of Commerce's Economic Development Administration (EDA) and National Institute of Standards and Technology Manufacturing Extension Partnership (NIST MEP); U.S. Department of Labor's Employment and Training Administration (ETA); and Delta Regional Authority (DRA). The deadline to submit an application is May 31, 2013. For information on how to apply, click here.
