This month, the theme is manufacturing. We have many interesting items to share including the National Governor's Association report, and their renewed focus on manufacturing.
Warren Jensen put together an interesting map on the role of the manufacturing industry in California's economic recovery. Be sure to view the manufacturing table that he created.
The Boston Consulting Group wrote an excellent report on "Made in America, Again: Why Manufacturing will Return to the U.S." Two additional articles on these topics: reshored manufacturing, and a "Make it in America Challenge fact sheet."
We have have excellent workshops coming up. The CED teamed up with the Small Business Development Center at Greater Sacramento / Sierra to present a workshop in Sacramento called "Growing Your Business --- Technology Made Simple." We hope to see you there April 11th. Finally, there is an Ag Nature/Tourism business development workshop coming up in April and a Additive Manufacturing Forum (details below).

New annual average employment numbers released last Friday confirm that manufacturing job growth to date has largely been missing from California's economic recovery. Since the state's number of jobs bottomed out in January 2010, California has recovered nearly 850,000 payroll jobs. Overall, California lost 1.67 million jobs since the state peaked in November 2007, so its recovery has now reached 50% of all jobs lost.

China's overwhelming manufacturing cost advantage over the U.S. is shrinking fast. Within five years, a Boston Consulting Group analysis concludes, rising Chinese wages, higher U.S. productivity, a weaker dollar, and other factors will virtually close the cost gap between the U.S. and China for many goods consumed in North America.
