Greetings!,

February is a busy month for our On-Campus Counseling Program staff as they begin interviewing intern candidates for the next school year. This year, OCC Program Director, Roni Gillenson, and the 8 OCC site directors are looking to hire 18 new interns for the 2013-2014 school year. At ACS, we take the intern hiring process very seriously. Roni attends a number of Bay Area college fairs and spends hours reviewing applications from students and graduates of notable masters and doctorate programs across the state. Interviews for candidates take place over a 10-week period and each candidate is interviewed in a two-part process; first in a group of 5-8 candidates interviewed by the entire OCC clinical staff and then in a one-on-one individual interview between the candidate and a member of the clinical staff.

I am proud of how hard the OCC Program staff work to find the best candidates for our largest program. Our interns are a reflection of the professionalism and commitment to quality mental health care that ACS stands for and each year I enjoy meeting the interns that will be the therapists of the future.

You can play a role in the careers of future therapists and the teens and families in need of our services. Spring Sounds, our annual fundraising gala, is quickly approaching on May 18, 2013. Spring Sounds will be held at AutoVino - a location that is home to Woodside Winery and a room full of beautiful cars. Join us for a wonderful evening all in support of our three programs. Tickets are on sale now - get them today to take advantage of our early bird pricing!

Dr. Philippe Rey

Sincerely,

Dr. Philippe Rey

Self-Injury and How to Confront it with your Teen

Self-Injury
-
refers to a variety of behaviors in which an individual
intentionally inflicts harm to his or her body for purposes not socially
recognized or sanctioned and without suicidal intent (ISSS, 2007)

Self-Injury can include:
  • Intentional cutting, carving, or puncturing of the skin
  • scratching
  • burning
  • ripping or pulling skin or hair
  • self bruising (through punching objects with the intention of hurting oneself or punching oneself directly)

How Should I Talk to My Child About His/Her Self-Injury?
-Address the issue as soon as possible. Don't presume your child will simply "outgrow" the behavior
-Try to use concern in a constructive way, your child realize the impact of his/her self-injury on themselves and others.
-It is important to validate your child's feelings. Remember this is different from validating the behavior.
  • Parents must first make eye contact and be respectful listeners before  offering their opinion.
  • Speak in calm and comforting tones
  • Offer reassurance
  • Consider what was helpful to you as an adolescent when experiencing emotional distress
-If your child does not want to talk, do not pressure him/her.
Self-injury is a very emotional subject and the behavior itself is often an indication that your child has difficulty verbalizing his/her emotions.  (Source:http://www.crpsib.com "Information About Self-Injury for Parents")
