Greetings!,

On behalf of Adolescent Counseling Services (ACS), I would like to wish you a very happy new year!   In this issue of our e-newsletter, you'll read about our Adolescent Substance Abuse Treatment (ASAT) Program and how we are meeting the needs of our clients by creating a tailored approach to their treatment plans.  I also invite you to take a look at our 2011-2012 Annual Report.  It is amazing to see all of the services provided to the community from July 1, 2011 to June 30, 2012. There is an especially interesting interview on page 4 with one of our former program interns.

The year just started but May will be here before we know it. Be sure to mark May 18, 2013 on your calendars and save the date for our annual gala, Spring Sounds.  Exquisite cars, fine wines, live and silent auctions - you do not want to miss this event!  We look forward to seeing you there!

Dr. Philippe Rey

Sincerely,

Dr. Philippe Rey

Executive Director

Join ACS to Make Adolescence Easier
Thank you to everyone who made a new or increased gift to ACS by the close of 2012.  Over 165 donors helped ACS successfully meet the challenge grant issued by the Sobrato Family Foundation!

You can still join ACS to make adolescent easier.  We need your help to raise $335,000 by the end of our fiscal year on June 30, 2013.  A gift of any size will ensure that no matter how minor or severe the issue, teens have the assistance of ACS to heal and lead emotionally healthy lives.
ACS Meets the Challenge

Adolescent Counseling Services (ACS) has long served the mental health needs of teens and their families on the Peninsula.  In 1991, ACS launched the Adolescent Substance Abuse Treatment (ASAT) Program to treat teens with substance abuse and dependency issues.  In the past two years, the program has matured, encompassing multi-modal approaches to treatment for youth who are struggling with issues beyond substance abuse.  "Lately in assessments, we are seeing kids with mental health issues who start using drugs or alcohol at a very early age - 12 or 13," said Connie Mayer, LMFT, Director of Outpatient Counseling Services.  "With these clients we have to examine which came first: the substance abuse, or the mental health issue that they are trying to manage with using substances?"

What Mayer describes is called a co-occurring disorder, which refers to an individual who has substance use and a mental health disorder at the same time.  These common mental health issues (called Axis I Disorders in the health field) include depression, anxiety disorders, bipolar disorders, and conduct disorders, to name a few.   Currently a majority of ASAT clients have co-occurring disorders.
