 A 'Best Community for Music Education'
For the fourth consecutive year, the NAMM Foundation has recognized the Shaker Heights schools for their strong commitment to music education. Only 176 school communities from across the nation earned the distinction this year based on such criteria as support for their music program, music class participation, funding, graduation requirements, instruction time, and facilities.  You're Invited to Our 100th Birthday Party!
Celebrate Shaker's 100th Birthday at the Ice Cream Social & Band Concert. Bring the family to this annual celebration on the High School's front lawn on May 1 at 6:30 p.m. (Rain location: North Gym.) Enjoy a dish of ice cream, a slice of birthday cake, and old-time music performed by Shaker's renowned High School bands. Trumpet, tuba, and saxophone instrumentalists from Woodbury and the Middle School will perform several pieces with the High School bands as well. This Centennial celebration is sponsored by the Shaker Schools Foundation in cooperation with the Band Boosters. |
 History Repeats Itself in NHD Competition
Shaker Heights High School has once again achieved remarkable success in the National History Day competition. Twenty-one of the 27 projects that qualified for Ohio History Day, to be held on April 28, after the district-level competition were created by Shaker students.  Board Approves Track & Field Improvements
The Board of Education has approved a bid for repairs and improvements to the track and field at Shaker Heights High School. Construction will begin this spring, with completion anticipated in August. Learn more... |
 Woodbury Makes a 'Souper' Impact
Woodbury students are gearing up for their first ever "Souper Bowl," an event that combines art, cuisine, and community service to benefit local families in need. Under the direction of art teachers Deanna Clemente-Milne and Robert Bognar, every student in the building has created, painted, and glazed a unique soup bowl, ready to be filled with delicious soups from local restaurateurs, for a suggested donation of $5 per bowl. Staff and community members were also invited to make bowls at several evening workshops last winter. Their creations will be available for a suggested donation of $10 each. The Souper Bowl will be held from 5-7 p.m. on April 30 at Woodbury. Proceeds will benefit organizations that serve local families in need. |
 More than 130 Colleges Admit Shaker Seniors
Members of the Class of 2012 have thus far been accepted by more than 130 colleges and universities, again including some of the most selective in the nation. Among them are all the Ivy League schools plus an eclectic and far-flung group including Carleton, Colorado College, Davidson, Howard, Juilliard, Miami, Northeast Ohio Medical University, Northwestern, Ohio State, Rice, Savannah College of Art and Design, Smith, and the University of Virginia. |
 Shaker Theatre Presents Ensemble Show
The annual Shaker Heights High School Theatre Ensemble Show, featuring the Senior, Advanced, and Junior Ensembles, will be performed at 8 p.m. on April 26, 27, and 28, in the school's Large Auditorium. This year, student performers will combine poetry, song, original movement, and dance pieces, including a revival of Kalama, set to Sufi music. Tickets are $10 for adults, $5 for students and senior adults. Tickets may be purchased online at tix.com. |
 Senior Awarded National Achievement Scholarship
Nia Morgan, a senior at the High School, has been named a National Achievement $2500 Scholarship winner. She is among approximately 800 students nationwide who have won Achievement Scholarship awards this year for undergraduate study. The National Merit Scholarship Corporation and about 30 corporations and professional associations finance these awards. The National Achievement Scholarship is one of several categories to be announced this spring in conjunction with the National Merit and National Achievement Scholarship programs. Further announcements are expected in the coming weeks. |
 Eureka! Greek Students Find Success
Twenty-two Shaker Heights High School students scored above the countrywide average on the National Greek Exam, earning blue, red, and green ribbons for their excellent results.  Art Students Stage Exhibition at Library
Shaker Heights High School art students will exhibit their work at the Shaker Heights Public Library from April 27 until May 11. Members of the public are invited to meet the artists and view their work at a gallery opening for the show on Friday, April 27, from 7-9 p.m. in the Shaker Art Gallery on the second floor of the Main Library, 16500 Van Aken Boulevard. |
 A Classic Performance on Latin Exam
Students from the Middle School and High School earned a chariotload of awards for their outstanding scores on this year's National Latin Exam. Sameer Apte, Brian Gao, Ben Robertson, Ben Shafran, Anav Sood, Bhavani Srinivas, Narayan Sundararajan, and Ezra Zigmond received perfect scores, and 154 students total were honored for their excellent performance.  Shaker Chess Teams Crowned Champs
The Shaker Heights High School Championship chess team captured first place at the Ohio High School/Middle School Chess competition held on March 31 and April 1 in Richfield. Teams from the Middle School and High School also finished first in the Reserve Sections. Students contributing to Shaker's success were Vishie Betapudi, Zoe Curtis, Zane Eisen (team captain), Jack Farrall, Brian Gao, De'Angello Gordon, Nick Haubrich, Jiawei He (team captain), Jonathan Holloway, Leo Izen, Rohit Kumar, Joshua Lugo-Ortiz, Daniel Luo, James Maye, Nia Morgan, Jerome Phelps, Jasmine Pollard, Shelli Reeves, Quiray Rogers, Kevin Taylor, Jimmy Zhu, and Luke Zhu. |
 School Meals Get Seal of Approval
The Cleveland Clinic has given its "seal of approval" to the meals served in Shaker's K-4 schools. Called "Eat Right at School," the Clinic program establishes nutrition standards that are more stringent than federal criteria. (View the Cleveland Clinic criteria.) Starting next school year you'll see the "A+" symbol on the online and printed menus. Shaker's food service is operated by AVI Fresh. |
 Red & White Tops $2 Million Mark
With this year's proceeds, A Night for the Red & White has now raised more than $2 million over its 20-year history for enrichment in the Shaker schools. About 750 guests attended the fundraiser this year, enjoying dining, dancing, and a silent auction, with a record number of corporate sponsors and net proceeds exceeding $105,000. |
 Shakerfest Celebrates Learning
Shaker students are showcasing their musical, theatrical, artistic, and academic accomplishments during this year's Shakerfest celebration. The annual event includes such activities as school open houses; student art shows; band, orchestra, and choral concerts; theatre ensemble performances; displays and demonstrations of student projects; and kindergarten welcome activities. The Shakerfest schedule offers a listing of activities, including times, dates, and locations. |
 Come Back to Shaker The Shaker Schools Foundation and the Shaker Heights Schools invite graduates from all classes to a special regional reunion on September 1, 2012. The reunion is part of a fun-packed weekend celebrating the Centennial of the Shaker Heights community and school district, as well as the Shaker Schools Foundation's 30th anniversary. The reunion will feature a cookout, a tour of the High School, and High School football game. Other events, sponsored by the Shaker Centennial Committee, include parties at Horseshoe Lake and Thornton Park, bike tours, a house tour, and a family movie night.
