Correction to New Cervicocerebral Imaging Codes for 2013
The new cervicocerebral imaging codes (CPT 36222-36228), which bundle catheterization and diagnostic imaging services, were developed to be reported with modifier 50 if performed bilaterally. However, the 2013 Medicare physician fee schedule lists a bilateral indicator of "0" for each of these codes. Therefore, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) will deny payment if modifier -50 is appended. SVS identified and successfully appealed this issue with CMS. CMS then corrected this error in its April Update to the regional carriers. The bilateral indicator is now listed as "1" which means 150 percent payment adjustment if billed with modifier 50. This change is effective retroactively to Jan. 1, 2013. On page eight of the 10 page CMS transmittal # 2677 it is clear that this has been fixed. This CMS PDF document can be used in the appeal process.

Varicose Veins Educational Campaign
The Rethink Varicose Veins educational campaign, in which SVS is a partner, will get more exposure this summer with the launch of a contest designed to encourage the public to realize that varicose veins are more than a cosmetic issue. The contest, open to all of those who take the mobile self-assessment at (www.RethinkVV.com/escape), will be publicized in the online editions of MORE Magazine, Ladies Home Journal, Better Homes & Gardens and Fitness. The Rethink Varicose Veins campaign is aimed at educating the public that if left untreated, varicose veins can progress to more serious chronic venous insufficiency.
