AADE DPP LIFESTYLE COACH TRAINING
AADE DPP Lifestyle Coach Trainings work with healthcare professionals over a period of two days to build the skills and tools participants enrolled in the National DPP need to develop healthy life-long habits and prevent or delay their risk of type 2 diabetes.
Participant success in the program happens from trained coaches' and their ability to provide information and support, leverage group dynamics through facilitation skills, build relationships, and delivering CDC's evidenced-based curriculum.
In the month of February, AADE is excited to announce the training of 17 new Lifestyle Coaches! Congratulations Coaches!

Spotlight on AADE's Diabetes Prevention Program Team
Woman's Hospital- Baton Rouge, La
Woman's Hospital is the 17th largest delivery service and the only free-standing hospital in the nation specializing in the care of woman and infants. Woman's Diabetes Self-Management Education (DSME) Program specializes in pre-conception planning, healthy pregnancy outcomes and post-partum care of patients diagnosed with gestational diabetes during pregnancy as well as women with pre-existing diabetes.   Woman's Metabolic Health and Research Services Center is dedicated to disease prevention through proactive risk assessment and provision of treatment options for women that have specific diabetes risk factors, such as: Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome, Gestational Diabetes and Pre-Diabetes.
Sara Nelms, MS, RDN, CDE coordinates the diabetes prevention and education programs at Woman's. According to Sara, "About 90% of the patients seen in our DSME program have gestational diabetes. These patients are initially seen by our Diabetes Nurse Educator and Registered Dietitian/CDE. Every patient is contacted two weeks after their initial appointment to assess compliance with self-monitoring of blood glucose, medical nutrition therapy and physical activity.   The importance of returning for post-partum blood work 6-12 weeks following delivery is emphasized.   All patients are educated on available GDM post-partum services. It has been exciting to add The American Association of Diabetes Educators Diabetes Prevention Program as an option for GDM post-partum care at Woman's. It's been a rewarding experience for our patients also."
Woman' implemented the Diabetes Prevention Program (DPP) in June 2015. Participants for the first cohort were referred by our metabolic clinic. Three DPP-trained lifestyle coaches conducted the sessions. The coaches have worked to engage participants through "real life" activities. The most challenging aspect of nutrition in Louisiana is avoiding traditional high-fat offerings, and learning to prepare those favorites in healthier ways. As one DPP participant stated, "Living in the state of Louisiana, where we love our traditional foods, choosing and preparing low-fat meals that taste good has always been a challenge The DPP has helped me to know how to modify most recipes with low-fat substitutions while still enjoying the flavors of Louisiana cuisine."
The participants honed their skills through field trips and cooking demonstrations including a group dining experience which focused on understanding restaurant menus so that low-fat choices are easier to make, low-fat food samplings (including snack/meal ideas for those "on-the-go" times when meal planning is difficult) and community education seminars on topics such as healthy holiday food choices.
The results have been promising. Woman's DPP Participants lost an average of 9.25 pounds during the 6-month core phase of the program. Participants also logged 116 minutes of physical activity each week.
Post-core sessions began in January, 2016. A guest speaker, Kieran Landry, spoke about ways to increase self-motivation and inspiration to stay focused on a healthy lifestyle to reduce the risk of developing Type 2 Diabetes. She will continue to work with Sara Nelms to provide support and encouragement throughout the post-core sessions. Strategies for post-core involvement (in addition to the monthly sessions) are weekly email messages, participant-led group exercise gatherings, and participation as a team in local group walking events.
Future plans include a partnership with the Woman's Center for Wellness to provide fitness training and memberships for program participants and expansion of marketing efforts to physician practices and the community. Woman's is also a member of the Mayor's Healthy City Initiative (a collective of health care institutions and non-profit agencies working in collaboration to improve the health of our city). The collaborative has designated diabetes as a top health priority for Baton Rouge, and promotion of the program through the Initiative will increase awareness of the importance of proactive diabetes education.
The DPP team at Woman's continues to focus on helping those at risk for diabetes achieve their goals in a supportive, interesting and interactive environment.

Fresh tip: The secret to cooking scallops successfully is to pat them dry with paper towels before adding them to the skillet and to not overcook them. Similarly, be careful not to brown the garlic in the canola oil.
