Act Today to Change Tomorrow
World Diabetes Day, on the 14th November every year, is a globally-celebrated event to increase awareness about diabetes.
AADE celebrated by inviting, Amy Hess-Fischl, MS, RDN, LDN, BC-ADM, to AADE headquarters. She spoke more about diabetes and the role of the role of the diabetes educator to help us celebrate National Diabetes Month!

Spotlight on AADE's DPP Team
INTEGRIS Baptist Medical Center
Oklahoma City, OK

INTEGRIS Baptist Medical Center is the state's largest Oklahoma-owned health care corporation and one of the largest private employers with about 9,000 employees statewide. The hospital provides physicians and patients with quality care and cost-efficiency, offering a full range of hospital services including an evidence-based lifestyle change program for those diagnosed with prediabetes. Participants of the program will have the opportunity to meet with trained lifestyle coaches in a group- based format to build the skills and lifestyle changes to prevent type 2 diabetes.

Lifestyle Coaches implementing the program provide support and guidance to participants, while making learning a shared objective of the group. Program Coordinator and Lifestyle Coach, Brent Wilson RD/LD, will ensure the program meets quality performance standards and the needs of the community. Brent studied Nutritional Sciences at the University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center. In addition to his role with the National Diabetes Prevention Program, he is currently the Program Coordinator for the INTEGRIS Diabetes Education Program.

INTEGRIS Baptist Medical Center implemented its first cohort last month, consisting of thirteen INTEGRIS employees and spouses. Completion of the program serves as a Health Improvement Program for their insurance, resulting in a discounted rate.

The program is located at INTEGRIS Pacer Fitness Center, in Oklahoma City, OK. Marketing strategies included on-site marketing and email blasts to staff employees.

Participants have been encouraging each other to achieve individual goals and provide support for one another. Several participants have begun walking together on lunch breaks. In session 6, they had the chance to have a Certified Personal Trainer take participants around and show exercise equipment, create exercise plans, and answer fitness questions.

"Participants are doing a fantastic job keeping detailed food and activity logs, and it is paying off!" says Program Coordinator, Brent Wilson. "Through five weeks our group has lost a total of 38 pounds and even more importantly, they are feeling better by eating healthier and having more active lifestyles."

INTEGRIS Health will continue to offer the National Diabetes Prevention Program to employees as a health improvement program. Plans are to make this program covered by their insurance provider in 2016. They also hope to take the program out into the Oklahoma City community where it is desperately needed.

Flavorful Tip:  Adding the canola oil under the skin helps bring out the flavors of the fresh herbs and lemon zest while keeping the turkey moist. So keep the skin on for cooking but don't forget to discard it before serving.
