VISTA Corner
Annalise Abma has been working on two projects thus far:
1) Haskell County Community Health Needs Assessment, which includes the creation of a survey and consent form to give to community members, and also an asset map, which outlines the strengths and assets of a community, such as businesses, organizations, and individual talent; and also,
2) Coordinating the Si Yo Puedo Controlar Mi Diabetes program initiative for the Abilene region. This program is a self-management intitiative that will target the Hispanic population of the Abilene area.

Cera Cantu has been working with a number of community and healthcare organizations to complete a 20-county Community Health Needs Assessment targeting low-income individuals. The needs assessment includes a 15-20 minute comprehensive health survey, detailed county reports that use secondary data and survey data, and community resource asset maps.  As the project is finishing up, Cera will be assisting with the written county reports and presenting the data to the organizations that serve the low-income populations in the counties to discuss identified gaps.

Leticia Cisneros reports that September kicked-off the 2016 United Way of Abilene Campaign to raise funds to support agencies in West Central Texas. She has assisted with emp
loyee campaigns and is currently working on building company and individual donor profiles. These profiles will expand the organizations knowledge about their donors in order to help ensure future funding opportunities within the area. The United Way of Abilene has set a goal of raising two million dollars this year in hopes to be able to fund all new and existing agencies applying for funds this year.

Sarah Floyd This weekend was the 2nd Annual Car Show at Texas State Technical College. The Abilene-Taylor County Health District came out to participate in the event and promoted health in the Abilene community by giving out flyers about different programs and services. It was a wonderful experience to get to talk to and meet different people in the community. Also, ideas about how we can improve future outreach opportunities were brainstormed.

Irene Fuentes
has been working on building rapport, gaining trust and establishing a referral base for Abilene-
Taylor County Public Health Department with area faith and community-based organizations. We have unaddressed health disparities that exit among our under-medically served community which impede their ability to live an optimal quality of life. While we cannot build organizations that are all-encompassing, we can and should form collaborative efforts to address these needs.
In order to develop a healthy future for everyone, we must address the person holistically.

Breast Cancer Awareness Month
This October, Big Country AHEC is proud to participate in National Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Breast cancer is the second most common kind of cancer in women. About 1 in 8 women born today in the United States will get breast cancer at some point.
The good news is that many women can survive breast cancer if it's found and treated early.
  • If you are a woman age 40 to 49, talk with your doctor about when to start getting mammograms and how often to get them.
  • If you are a woman age 50 to 74, be sure to get a mammogram every 2 years. You may also choose to get them more often.
Talk to a doctor about your risk for breast cancer, especially if a close family member of yours had breast or ovarian cancer. Your doctor can help you decide when and how often to get mammograms.
