Hello All!
Creeping into spring slowly...April began with a flurry of travel for most everyone at the studio. At the beginning of the month, I traveled to Sarasota and taught at Teresa Kruger's Pilates Principles studio. Then I met up with Elizabeth, Mo and Terry in Ft. Lauderdale where Tina and I cheered them on for their Advanced Seminar. The rest of the month will be busy preparing the apprentices for their Advanced written and practical tests in May. Thinking about our 10 year anniversary, I keep thinking about those early days even before the studio opened in 2003. I had a reformer, cadillac, chair and barrel in a tiny room at the Mettler Center. There, I began teaching the work to curious folks who decided to take a chance on this new kind of exercise. I am not sure exactly who my first client was back then...it may have been Dorothy Lawrence. But there was also Nancy Jeckel, Diane Gottheil, Robert Riley, Barb Geissler, Monica Miller and Ellen Jacobsen. Then the mat class I taught there brought in Sue Kitson and Susan Feuille. Am I forgetting anyone? Please take time to read about our 10+ year clients in this newsletter. The stories of their lives and how Pilates has affected them is inspirational! The point being, not only does Pilates become a life long endeavor, it forges relationships and community. We at DPC feel privileged to be a part of your life! Janice

The Advanced seminar was held the first weekend in April at Romana's granddaughter, Daria Pace's studio Romana's Pilates. It was taught by Sari Santo, Romana's daughter. Tina and Janice accompanied the apprentices on the trip. They were excited to go together and enjoy the three days of learning and being with the family of Romana!

Dressage Today Reviews Janice's New DVD
Janice's DVD, "Nine Pilates Essentials for the Balanced Rider: A Magic Circle Workout," is a hit with the reviewer for Dressage Today, the premiere periodical of the US Dressage community. She writes... "there are plenty of Pilates programs out there, but I think this one has an edge..." The review appears in the April issue of Dressage Today.

"I distinctly remember my first "demo" session with Janice over 10 years ago when she was not too long in town and still at the Mettler Center. I was immediately struck by how right both Pilates and the way Janice taught it was for me. I have fibromyalgia and know that the best medicine is to keep moving. Also, I had been a runner and more recently a walker and was a fairly regular gym goer where I did strength training and cardio. But it seemed logical that working to strengthen the core should be the basis for all other kinds of movement and exercise. So, I was hooked!
I have worked with Janice since then, and for some years took mat class, taking off only after 3 minimally invasive spinal surgeries I had between 2008 and 2011. Clearly my condition prior to those surgeries was so much better thanks to Pilates, as was my recovery. Now I am facing hip replacement and reading the literature about this I am so happy that I have been a regular at the Dulak Pilates Center, working with Janice and at times with one of several of the other outstanding teachers. I will be back in the studio asap, taking orders, working hard, but very thankful that we have this fabulous resource right here in Champaign-Urbana!"

"I had heard of Pilates and when Janice arrived in town I went to her open house and began taking lessons with her immediately.
I have a background in dance and have done a lot of Yoga, TaiChi and some martial arts. All of my efforts to become physically more effective stem from my dressage riding and the desire to be a better athlete to help my horses perform more effectively.
Pilates has made a difference in the way I feel and the way I look. Otherwise I would not have continued for such a long time."

"Janice came very highly recommended by someone whose opinion I value. She said that Janice was the "real deal," a Pilates instructor who had been properly and extensively trained in the Joseph Pilates tradition. That level of training was (and is) very important to me. I needed to work on both stretching and strengthening so Pilates was a perfect match. Janice started slowly so I didn't hurt myself which is what invariably happened when I tried just about anything other than swimming. It took me a while but eventually I was able to touch my nose to my knee doing "the tree" - I think we opened a bottle of champagne that night to celebrate!
Plain and simple, Pilates keeps me moving. Whenever I have to miss Pilates (for me, that's 2 lessons per week) my body stiffens up. But it only takes one session to get into better alignment and I'm positive that I'm an inch taller. Also, over the years, I've met several wonderful people through the studio. Pilates is a bright, happy part of my week."

Tip of the Month...from Tina Campbell
Tina's tip this month comes from the writings of Joseph Pilates, from his 1945 book, Return to Life Through Contrology.
If you have trouble sleeping, try doing a Roll-up, Wall Roll Down, or the Spine Stretch Forward. These rolling and unrolling exercises massage the spine, relax the nerves and help cleanse the body. "It is far better to be tired from physical exertion than to be fatigued by the 'poisons' generated by nervousness while lying awake." The next time you are lying in bed, wishing you were asleep, try one of these exercises to put your body and mind at ease.
