When to Outsource Web Design
I just learned of a university that is disbanding its Web Development Group and outsourcing all their work. Just a week ago I talked to another college that was looking to hire a Director to build a Web Development Group because their outsourced solution proved costly and scheduling deadlines was always an issue.
Which is the better way to go?
Outsource works best when:
- You don't have the resources to hire a full Web team. Two people can't handle the workload of most Web offices. Don't doom your Web staff to failure. When you can't afford a Web team - outsource.
- Your organization has no legacy systems. If your organizational Website uses a simple turnkey Content Management System, then you can outsource without facing an endless series of questions and complications from your outsourcing partner.
- You have no quick turn around needs. Web design firms, if they are good, have a lot of customers. You won't get immediate turn around. If you do, you will pay. If you are in a position where you constantly need work done for quick deadlines, you will save money with an in-house Web group.

This is, especially true if your team does not have a lot of experience with the type of project you are tackling.
Task estimations are important to a Web team's success. If your team is struggling with accurate task estimations you might be interested in the method I've used with success to improve my teams' predictions. (Note: you may never nail this every time, but improving a little on each successive project - that is entirely doable.) Read more...
