Greetings to Alumni of All Schools,
We are surrounded by the beauty of the Advent season as the blessed holiday of Christmas draws near. As I was thinking of a very special message for this month's eNewsletter, I was reminded of the classic song "The Twelve Days of Christmas" and its lyrics that represent special gifts. MMC has received many gifts (recognitions) throughout this year and we'd like to sing them out! Unfortunately, you'll have to imagine the melody in your head as you read along, but there's a "gift" for each of the twelve days of Christmas:
- MMC is the first college in the nation with the Fierce Leadership Program, which will integrate leadership concepts and training into the curriculum of every program and to every student
- No increase in the 2014-15 MMC tuition
- MMC's Dr. Larry Dahlen named 2014 Didactic Instructor of the Year, American Association of Nurse Anesthetists (AANA)
- MMC is recognized regionally and nationally by Washington Monthly and AffordableCollegesOnline.org, just to name a couple
- Dr. Tom Lorang named as MMC Interim President
- MMC has 14 sports programs recognized as NAIA scholar teams
- MMC increased new student (+10%) and transfer student (+8%) enrollment
- New Avera Science Laboratory opens on campus
- MMC Alum, Mary Pistulka, C'75, is 2014 National Home Care and Hospice Nurse of the Year
- First Dakota National Bank donates to Master of Education Program (for more on this story, click here)
- MMC Receives STEM Education Funding (for more on this story, click hereclick here)
- MMC Nurse Anesthesia Program receives 10 year accreditation and glowing congratulations from the accreditation board (COA) (for more on this story, click here)
Thank you alumni, students, families, faculty, staff, board members, Sisters of Sacred Heart Monastery and friends of MMC for all your help, prayers, inspiration, support and generosity to make these possibilities a reality during 2014!
May your holiday season and the new year be filled with much love, peace and joy. I look forward to seeing and visiting with many of you this coming year and I hope you each have a wonderful holiday season. Merry Christmas!
Sincerely,
Dave

First Dakota National Bank Donates to Master of Education Program
For many teachers in the Yankton area, continuing their education beyond a bachelor's degree is something that has required them to leave the community to finish.
However, recently donated funds of $20,000 from First Dakota National Bank and a newly revamped program offered through Mount Marty College is giving them the chance to obtain their master's degree while staying at home and more importantly staying in their classrooms.

MMC Receives STEM Education Funding
Mount Marty College's work is already taking place in a statewide effort to strengthen South Dakota's STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) education and STEM workforce.
MMC received a $50,000 portion of a contribution from South Dakota Research and Innovation Center (SDRIC) fund to Biochemical Spatio-temporal NeTwork Resource (BioSNTR) for STEM education and workforce development. Mount Marty College Assistant Professor of Biology, Dr. Vicki Geiser, will have student researchers in her lab investigating the biocompatibility of materials used in scaffolding for growing tissues. The research will investigate how varying the composition of the scaffolding material impacts cell signaling that leads to altercation of tissue growth and differentiation.

Campus News:
Nurse Anesthesia Program Receives Continued
Accreditation
The Mount Marty College Master of Science (MS) Nurse Anesthesia Program recently received notification that its routine accreditation resulted in its continued full accreditation extended through the year 2024. The accreditation process at MMC was done through the Council on Accreditation of Nurse Anesthesia Educational Programs (COA).
The COA accreditation included a glowing form of congratulations. An accreditation term of ten years is infrequently delivered and very few programs are granted accreditation with no progress report required. Therefore, the directors of the COA were particularly pleased to offer their congratulations to everyone at the program who demonstrated their commitment to meeting the requirements for continued accreditation.
This is the second consecutive ten year accreditation term that Mount Marty College's graduate nurse anesthesia program has received from the COA.

Fontanini Bethlehem Village on Display
A stunning Fontanini Bethlehem Village consisting of over 400 pieces that was donated to Mount Marty College will be on display throughout the Advent season. The village can be viewed in the Boardroom, located in the Scholastica Learning Center (SLC), Monday, December 8th through Tuesday December 23 from 2-6 pm. Special weekend viewings will also be available December 13-14 and 20-21 from 1-4 pm. The public is welcomed to view the village at no cost.
Over ten years ago the Fontanini Bethlehem Village was donated to the College by Father Terry Weber of the Sioux Falls Diocese. "This is much more than a nativity scene," says Director of Campus Ministry, Sr. Maribeth Wentzlaff. "This is a depiction of what life in Bethlehem would have looked like at the time of Jesus's birth. It is an opportunity for the people in the community to further understand what it was like during another time and reality."

Alum Spotlight
Holly (Byrkeland) Carter, C'13
For Holly (Byrkeland) Carter, choosing a college for her undergrad degree was not a difficult decision because her dad is from Yankton and the city was more like her second home. She has a lot of family that lived and still lives in Yankton. Holly also wanted to continue her softball career and was given a scholarship to play while she was at MMC until a shoulder injury quickly ended her career. She adds with a smile, "Where on earth can you dual major in education and complete all of the required credits within exactly four years - not many places guarantee that!" Also, Holly felt that with the small class sizes and getting into the classroom (within elementary schools) right away first semester of freshman year, she was able to get to know her professors on a first name basis, create relationships with them, and was able to see how the world of education was going to be like as she was entering it as a profession.
The person who had a positive impact on Holly's career and personal life path at MMC was Sister Candy. Still to this day, they keep in contact with each other, updating with how their lives are changing, exciting milestones they are both facing. Holly says, "Sister Candy was always there for me whenever I needed advice, a person to talk to, and someone to share stories with. She is a professor who cares about each of her students."
While Holly attended MMC, she had the opportunity to work for the Boys and Girls Club of Yankton for work-study. While she worked for them, Holly would go to the elementary schools in Yankton and help tutor children who needed extra assistance. During that time, she created a relationship with a little girl who needed a woman figure in her life. The relationship she created with her is one she won't forget.
